The Michael Seely Memorial Fillies’ Stakes at York looks one of the most informative races of the week, with several exciting three-year-old fillies attempting to bridge the gap from novice level into Pattern company over the round mile on good ground.

A small field of seven should ensure a tactical contest, and with no guaranteed strong pace on paper, positioning and the ability to quicken could prove decisive. York’s mile often rewards fillies who can travel comfortably near the pace before producing a turn of foot in the straight.

The established form horse is Pacific Mission, who brings the strongest juvenile credentials into the race. Andrew Balding’s filly finished runner-up in both the Group 2 May Hill Stakes and the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar last autumn. Those performances set a clear standard and she already looks proven at this level, although her tendency to start slowly is a slight concern in a steadily run affair.

The most exciting unexposed contender may be Synchronicity for Ed Walker. A sister to Ombudsman, she created a big impression when winning on debut at Newbury last month. The form has already received several boosts, with the runner-up, fourth and fifth all winning subsequently. She travelled strongly and shaped as though the step up to a mile would suit even better.

John and Thady Gosden saddle two interesting fillies in So Regal and Fashion People. So Regal looked highly professional when winning at Ascot and appears a steadily progressive type, while Fashion People has shown plenty of natural speed but may need to settle better over this longer trip.

Act Of Kindness also commands respect after finishing third in the Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket and should appreciate moving up to a mile.

It promises to be a high-quality Listed contest with Group performers likely to emerge from the field.
