Newbury 2:40 – Titan Wealth Handicap Preview
Newbury’s 1m2f Titan Wealth Handicap looks one of the stronger Class 3 contests of the week, with a fascinating mix of proven handicap form and several lightly raced 4yos who could still be ahead of their marks.
Tactically, the race may not be strongly run. Clouds Hill made all at Yarmouth on his return and could again go forward, while Alcarath also has pace. That could place extra emphasis on track position and tactical speed around this galloping circuit, particularly on good ground.
The proven class act is Hand Of God, who drops from major Class 2 handicaps into calmer waters here. His seventh in the Spring Cup on seasonal return was better than it looked after a long absence, and the return to 1m2f should suit. He remains on a workable mark if building on that effort.
However, the most interesting contender may be Celeborn. George Boughey’s 4yo has only raced four times and already showed he can win fresh when successful at Epsom after a lengthy layoff last season. He returns from another absence here, but his pedigree suggests this step up to 1m2f could bring further improvement. Billy Loughnane is another positive booking.
High Degree (TimeWise top ranked) also commands respect for William Haggas. Gelded since last seen, he shaped well in stronger handicaps last season and still looks capable of progressing beyond his current rating. From a good draw, he should get an ideal tactical position.
Among the dangers, Oursin is completely unexposed on turf after two AW novice wins, while Al Durry (TimeWise 2nd ranked) arrives unbeaten in her last two starts and could have more to offer switching surfaces.
This looks a race where improvement may prove decisive, and several runners enter with significant upside still untapped.
