2:55 York Preview – Support Macmillan Charity Raceday Handicap
Friday’s 2:55 at York is a deep Class 2 handicap over 1m2f56y on good ground, and course form could prove especially important. This race often suits horses who travel smoothly and hold a position, as York’s long straight gives every horse a chance but can still punish those forced to come from too far back in a big field.
The pace is likely to come from Empire Of Light, who has made all on his last two starts, while Tony Montana, Have Secret and Thunder Run should not be far away. That could make tactical position important, with hold-up types such as Per Contra, Ashnak and possibly Warrant Holder needing luck in running.
Warrant Holder is the most intriguing runner. He is lightly raced, from the Gosden yard, and shaped like a horse with more to offer when winning at Newcastle last autumn. Stall 4 is a positive, and he rates a progressive type, though this is a much tougher environment than a small-field AW handicap.
Thunder Run won this race last year from the same mark and is dangerous if bouncing back from two below-par runs. Tony Montana, second in this race last season, also has strong claims after a solid reappearance at Newbury. Have Secret arrives in form after winning at Pontefract and was third in this contest last year, so he looks a dependable player.
Of the others, Regal Ulixes remains progressive, Per Contra is interesting back over this C&D, and Ashnak could improve for David O’Meara after shaping well at Ripon.
Smart Play: Warrant Holder is the win selection, with Have Secret the each-way saver. Thunder Run and Tony Montana are respected as proven York handicappers.
