The Listed Marygate Fillies’ Stakes at York on Friday looks one of the strongest early-season juvenile contests run so far this year, with several unbeaten fillies bringing smart profiles into a race that often throws up future Pattern performers.

York’s straight 5f on good ground is a proper test for inexperienced two-year-olds. Natural speed is essential, but so too are professionalism and the ability to settle under pressure in a strongly run race. This year’s field contains plenty of early pace, with Princesse d’Orange, Lady Blanche and Armor Supreme all likely to force matters from the outset.

Lover Girl sets the standard on form after making it two from two in a Salisbury conditions race earlier this month. Her performance there was backed up by strong ratings and she looked notably professional throughout, travelling powerfully before quickening away. The Kevin Philippart De Foy-trained filly has already shown she can adapt tactically and her profile suggests there is still more improvement to come.

Princesse d’Orange is arguably the most exciting runner in the field. David O’Meara’s filly made a striking impression when bolting up at Beverley on debut, winning by four lengths after showing abundant early pace. The visual impact of that success marked her down as a potential Pattern-class juvenile and York’s long straight should suit her attacking style.

Lady Blanche also commands respect after improving significantly to win at Bath in authoritative fashion. Karl Burke’s juveniles are always worth close attention at this stage of the season and she looks another filly capable of progressing beyond Listed company.

Niewiadoma and Love A Giggle complete a competitive shortlist, while debutante Angels Passing is an interesting market watch for the Kevin Ryan stable.

At this stage, Lover Girl narrowly gets the vote ahead of Princesse d’Orange in what promises to be a high-quality renewal.
