The Boodles Yorkshire Cup at York looks a fascinating early-season staying contest, with several progressive four-year-olds taking on hardened older campaigners over 1m6f on good ground.
A small field of seven could make this more tactical than a true stamina test, and that may prove crucial around York, where positioning and rhythm often matter just as much as outright staying power. There is no guaranteed front-runner in the line-up, so riders who secure a handy position without overcommitting could hold a major advantage turning for home.
Amiloc heads the market after a highly progressive three-year-old campaign. Ralph Beckett’s colt improved with every run last season, winning at Royal Ascot before finishing second in the Irish St Leger and fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Those efforts set the standard in this field and, as a lightly raced stayer, he still has the profile of a horse capable of reaching Group 1 level this season.
Rahiebb is another fascinating contender. Roger Varian’s Frankel colt was narrowly denied in the St Leger at Doncaster and shaped throughout last year as though further improvement would come with maturity. This trip on good ground should suit well, although a steadily-run race could leave him needing luck from off the pace.
Epic Poet brings strong York form into the race after going close in this contest twelve months ago. David O’Meara’s durable seven-year-old remains highly reliable and his tactical speed could become a major asset if the race develops into a sprint from halfway.
The potential dark horse is Furthur, who defeated Epic Poet in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes last season before running respectably in the Melbourne Cup. Now gelded and still relatively unexposed as a stayer, he looks capable of another step forward this year.
Verdict: Amiloc gets the vote ahead of Rahiebb, with Furthur the most interesting each-way angle if the market allows.
