The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes at York once again looks a key Derby trial, with a deep field of progressive three-year-olds lining up over 1m2f on good ground. York’s long straight and fair galloping nature normally reward balance, tactical pace and stamina, and this year’s renewal contains several colts with genuine Classic aspirations.
Aidan O’Brien holds a particularly strong hand with both Christmas Day and Action. Ryan Moore partners Christmas Day, which is notable given Action sets the standard on ratings after his close second in last season’s Group 1 Futurity Trophy. However, Action disappointed on his reappearance at Sandown when never travelling comfortably, and there remains a slight concern that he may be better suited by softer conditions.
Christmas Day arrives with the more progressive profile. The Camelot colt took a clear step forward when winning the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown and shaped like a horse with plenty more to offer over middle distances. He looks straightforward tactically and should be well suited by York.
The chief threat could come from Morshdi for William Haggas. He already has winning course form at York and impressed with the manner of his Listed Feilden Stakes success at Newmarket on his seasonal return. His smooth travelling style and proven effectiveness on good ground make him a particularly solid contender.
Among the more unexposed runners, Item is fascinating. The unbeaten Frankel colt has not been seen since September but represents a stable that excels with patient middle-distance types. Significant market support would be worth noting.
Charlie Appleby’s Al Zanati and King’s Trail both bring useful form, though each still has something to prove at this level.
Overall, Christmas Day sets the standard on progression, while Morshdi appeals as the strongest alternative in a high-quality Dante.
