The British Stallion Studs EBF Westow Stakes at York looks one of the stronger early-season 3yo sprint contests and could produce a Royal Ascot contender. Run over a sharp 5f on good ground, this Listed race often rewards horses with tactical speed, previous York experience and the ability to travel strongly in a well-run sprint.
This year’s renewal features an intriguing blend of proven juvenile Pattern performers and rapidly improving spring sprinters. Revival Power sets a high standard after winning both the Listed Roses Stakes over this course and distance and the Group 2 Flying Childers last season. Tim Easterby’s filly showed genuine speed and professionalism throughout her juvenile campaign and returns with conditions very much in her favour. The family connection is also notable, with her sister Winter Power having won this race before going on to land the Nunthorpe.
Aspect Island brings arguably the strongest established form into the race. His placed efforts in the Cornwallis Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint put him right at the top of the ratings. His recent Newmarket comeback suggested he has trained on well and the drop back into his own age group looks a major positive.
The most fascinating contender may be Manatee Mehmas. David O’Meara’s colt made a striking debut at Doncaster, travelling smoothly before quickening clear in impressive fashion. This is a significant rise in grade after only one start, but he has the profile of a potentially smart sprinter and the market will be informative.
Dickensian appeals as a solid each-way option after consistently strong juvenile sprint form, while Simplify arrives seeking a four-timer and continues to progress.
Overall, this looks a race likely to throw up future Group performers, with Revival Power narrowly preferred ahead of Aspect Island and the unexposed Manatee Mehmas.
