4:40 York Blog Preview

The 4:40 York, the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Handicap, is a deep 19-runner 5f contest for three-year-olds on good ground. This looks a proper speed test, with several natural pace angles likely to ensure a strong gallop from the outset.

The early pace could come from Shes Got A Brother, Naana’s Shadow, Hanney Girl, Storm Esme and possibly Chairmanfourtimes. In a big-field York sprint, the draw is rarely simple; the key may be which group has the strongest pace to tow them into the race. Hold-up types will need luck, but a contested lead could set this up for something finishing strongly.

Desert Treasure is the most appealing profile. She is unbeaten in two starts, has looked promising over 5f, and starts handicapping from a mark that may underestimate her. The layoff and possibility of a slow break are minor concerns, but she remains a filly with clear upside.

Schrodinger’s Cat brings stronger recent handicap evidence. He has run two solid races this spring, including when finishing well at Chester after early interference. A fast-run York 5f should suit, and he looks a reliable contender.

Old Is Gold is also respected. He was better than the bare result at Sandown, where he missed the break and met trouble. With a cleaner passage, he can get involved.

Of the others, Call Margot is progressive for Gemma Tutty and should enjoy a strong pace, while Shes Got A Brother and Stargazed are lightly raced types with potential. Naana’s Shadow is another in-form sprinter to note after winning well at Catterick.

The market should be watched closely for runners returning from layoffs, especially Desert Treasure, Stargazed, Kinnalargy and Nuevo Slovo.

Smart Play: Desert Treasure is the win selection, with Schrodinger’s Cat the solid each-way saver.
