The 1:42 at Newmarket looks a typically competitive straight-mile handicap, but there are a few runners who stand out on profile, track suitability and potential improvement.

The horse with the most upside is Twisting Physics. Still lightly raced for a five-year-old, he shaped far better than the bare result when sixth at Newbury on his seasonal return. He failed to settle early over 1m2f, met traffic in the straight and still finished strongly once seeing daylight. Dropping back to a mile on the Rowley Mile looks ideal and his previous Newbury win showed he can travel smoothly in a strongly-run handicap. Jamie Spencer should suit him well, especially if the pace develops evenly.

Jimmy Speaking commands plenty of respect after back-to-back wins at Doncaster and Southwell. He has become more consistent with racing and looks the type still progressing through the handicap ranks. His prominent racing style is often an advantage in these straight-mile contests and Silvestre De Sousa is an eye-catching booking.

Final Night is another who arrives in form after a good second over course and distance earlier this month. His all-weather improvement transferred nicely back to turf and he remains competitively treated if building again on that effort.

Veteran Helm Rock deserves a mention too. The eight-year-old has been in excellent order this spring and his recent Nottingham second confirmed he still retains plenty of enthusiasm. While younger legs may have more improvement, his consistency makes him dangerous.

At bigger prices, Gorgeous Mr George could outrun his odds. He has solid Newmarket form and should strip fitter for his reappearance run at Yarmouth.

Overall, this race may come down to whether proven recent form can hold off the unexposed potential of Twisting Physics, who looks capable of developing into a better-class handicapper this season.
