Sacred Ground and Golden Orbit Head Intriguing Newbury Oaks Trial

Newbury’s Childwickbury Stud Fillies’ Trial Stakes looks a fascinating early-season test for a group of lightly raced three-year-olds with Classic aspirations. Run over 1m2f on good ground, this Listed contest has often highlighted progressive middle-distance fillies, and this year’s renewal contains several with considerable upside.

The standout on recent form is Sacred Ground, trained by John and Thady Gosden. The daughter of Kingman, out of Oaks winner Anapurna, brings the strongest current credentials after finishing second in a Newmarket Listed race earlier this month. She travelled smoothly throughout that contest and stayed on well behind an impressive winner, while finishing ahead of today’s rival Esna. With race fitness on her side and further improvement likely at this trip, she sets a solid standard.

The most intriguing runner may be Golden Orbit for Ralph Beckett. A well-bred daughter of Sea The Stars, she won a Newmarket maiden on her sole juvenile start and shaped as though middle distances would unlock significant improvement. Beckett has an excellent record with staying fillies and this race looks an ideal stepping stone towards bigger summer targets.

Esna brings strong juvenile form to the table, notably her excellent fourth in the Group 1 Marcel Boussac at Longchamp last autumn. However, she was unable to threaten when reappearing at Newmarket and still has to prove she fully stays this distance on quick ground.

Of the outsiders, Lady Roisia appeals as one with long-term potential. She is out of Oaks winner Talent and represents another strong middle-distance pedigree from the Beckett yard.

With a small field and no obvious front-runner, tactics could prove crucial. A steadily-run race may favour those with tactical speed and a sharp turn of foot rather than pure stamina alone.
