The Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury often provides an informative stepping stone towards Royal Ascot’s Commonwealth Cup, and this year’s Listed contest looks a particularly strong edition. Several runners arrive with proven Group form from last season, while others still have the potential to improve significantly at three.
Charlie Appleby’s Wise Approach sets a high standard on juvenile achievements. The Middle Park winner already has course-and-distance form after landing a Listed race here last summer and should strip fitter for his recent Ascot comeback. Newbury’s straight six furlongs clearly suits his style, and his proven class makes him a major player despite carrying a penalty.
Royal Fixation is another with top-level juvenile form and could prove very dangerous receiving the fillies’ allowance. Now with Karl Burke, she won the Lowther Stakes at York before finishing a strong third in the Cheveley Park Stakes behind the subsequent 1000 Guineas heroine. That form line reads extremely well now, and further improvement this season looks likely.
Aidan O’Brien’s Albert Einstein remains one of the more intriguing contenders. He shaped like a colt with considerable ability over seven furlongs earlier this spring but raced too keenly on both outings. The drop back to six furlongs could suit perfectly, allowing his natural speed to come more into play. If settling better, he has the potential to emerge as a genuine Commonwealth Cup contender.
Among the others, Havana Hurricane brings consistency and valuable sprint experience after several strong efforts in major juvenile races, while Song Of The Clyde also has solid big-field sprint credentials.
Overall, this looks a race where proven sprint form should carry plenty of weight. Royal Fixation and Wise Approach set the standard, while Albert Einstein remains the fascinating wildcard with significant upside.
