The Highclere Castle Gin Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury looks an informative early-season sprint for the three-year-olds, with several runners holding Commonwealth Cup ambitions later in the summer. Run over Newbury’s straight 6f on good ground, this Listed contest often rewards horses with proven speed, the ability to settle and a sharp turn of foot late on.
The standout established form belongs to Wise Approach, last season’s Middle Park Stakes winner. Charlie Appleby’s colt already has strong Newbury credentials after winning here as a juvenile and shaped better than the bare result on his seasonal return at Ascot. He should come on for that outing and sets the benchmark on ratings despite carrying a penalty.
Royal Fixation is a fascinating rival on her debut for Karl Burke. The filly ended last season with excellent efforts in the Lowther Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes, and that latter form has worked out particularly well following the subsequent success of the winner in the 1,000 Guineas. Receiving weight from the colts could prove significant in a race likely to be decided by fine margins.
Aidan O’Brien’s Albert Einstein remains one of the more intriguing runners. He shaped like a high-class colt over 7f earlier this season but raced too freely on both starts. Dropping back to 6f may suit ideally and Ryan Moore’s mount still has the profile of a horse capable of considerable improvement.
Havana Hurricane and Song Of The Clyde bring solid sprint form and should not be overlooked, particularly if race fitness becomes important late on.
Overall, this looks a deep and competitive renewal. Wise Approach brings the strongest proven sprint form, Royal Fixation receives a valuable allowance, while Albert Einstein could yet emerge as the horse with the most untapped potential.
