Newmarket 3:27 Preview – Straight Track Specialists Set for Competitive Sprint Handicap
The 3:27 at Newmarket on Saturday looks a fascinating Class 4 sprint handicap over 6f on the Rowley Mile, with several proven straight-track performers taking on a handful of progressive types.
Good ground should suit most of the field, and over this straight six furlongs tactical pace and track position can be crucial. There does not appear to be a huge amount of confirmed early speed, which could favour those able to race prominently before quickening late.
One of the more solid contenders is Miraculous, who shaped much better than the bare result when fifth at Chester last week. He was denied a clear run at a key stage and still finished with plenty of purpose. Tim Easterby’s four-year-old has strong sprint handicap form from last season and looks capable of winning from his current mark if things fall right.
Expert Agent also enters calculations after a consistent spell on the all-weather and turf. His Windsor second earlier this month suggested he remains in excellent heart, and he looks well suited by a strongly-run six furlongs.
Course form is always worth respecting at Newmarket and Sixtygeesbaby catches the eye despite three below-par runs for David O’Meara. He finished second over course and distance last autumn off a higher mark and would be a major player if rediscovering that level.
Among the unexposed runners, Tabby is particularly interesting. James Tate’s lightly raced filly has won and placed on the all-weather this spring and could still have more improvement to come on her turf debut.
Elsewhere, Dashing Dick and last year’s winner Rebel Path are both capable of outrunning their odds given their strong records at the track.
This looks the type of Newmarket sprint where proven course form and tactical positioning may prove decisive.
