5f, Standard Tapeta, 3yo+ | 6 runners
A compact novice with limited pace on paper. Timeform’s “Very Weak” pace forecast looks important here because tactical speed and track position could prove decisive over Newcastle’s sharp 5f. In steadily-run Tapeta sprints, those racing prominently are often favoured, particularly when the tempo does not collapse late.
With only six runners after the non-runners, draw bias is less significant than usual, though low-to-middle stalls can still be advantageous if the pace steadies. The key tactical angle is whether Zain Primus can sit handy and control matters before the closers are organised.
Pace / Draw / Race Shape Assessment
Expected pace: Weak
Likely beneficiaries: Zain Primus, possibly Gold Digger if sharp enough after absence
Potential hold-up risk: Spaceman could need the race to develop properly if ridden patiently
Draw impact: Minimal in a small field, though stall 1 for Gold Digger gives options
This looks a race where tactical positioning should carry slightly more weight than raw finishing sectionals.

Runner-by-runner assessment
1. ZAIN PRIMUS – 8.5/10 (P)
Progressive and already proven under race conditions. His Kempton novice win reads strongly now and the form has reportedly worked out very well. He showed professionalism there and the return to 5f in a steadily-run race may actually suit because he has the tactical speed to hold position early.
The fitness edge over his two principal rivals is a major positive. Connor Beasley is a strong Newcastle rider and John Butler’s sprinters often do well on synthetic surfaces.
Suitability:
Going/Surface: Proven AW
Trip: Fine at 5f if pace steady
Track: Should suit
Pace setup: Ideal
The most solid profile in the field.
—
2. APRIL DIAMOND – 2/10
Looks exposed already and her two runs this season have offered little encouragement. Likely to find handicaps more suitable after this.
Suitability:
Track: Unproven at required level
Class: Looks outclassed
Pace setup: No obvious help
Hard to recommend.
—
3. GOLD DIGGER (IRE) – 8/10 (P)
Potentially the most talented horse in the field on raw juvenile form. Winning first time out before a respectable Albany Stakes sixth behind Venetian Sun is smart novice form for this level.
However, the 333-day absence creates uncertainty. She may need the run and this race shape is not ideal for a horse returning from a long break if ridden patiently.
That said, Richard Spencer can ready one after an absence and stall 1 gives Saffie Osborne tactical flexibility.
Suitability:
Class: Strong
Ability level: Arguably highest ceiling
Fitness: Main concern
Pace setup: Slight concern in tactical race
Market strength would be highly significant.
—
4. PROJECT WALLACE (IRE) – 5.5/10 (P)
Interesting newcomer from a yard capable with debutants. The pedigree suggests speed and the stable stat with first-time runners catches the eye.
Inexperience in a tactical 5f novice is not ideal though, particularly against race-fit rivals with stronger form already established.
Suitability:
Potential: Interesting
Experience: Negative
Pace setup: Could get caught flat-footed
One to monitor closely in the market.
—
5. QILA – 4.5/10
Showed some ability last season including over C&D. The breathing operation may help and there is scope for improvement after only two starts.
However, she needs a sizeable step forward on ratings and this does not look the easiest spot against several potentially smart types.
Suitability:
Track: Proven
Improvement possible: Yes
Class level: Questionable
Could outrun bigger expectations without necessarily threatening the principals.
—
6. SPACEMAN (IRE) – 8/10 (P)
Very appealing debut effort at Redcar when finishing strongly into second in a large-field novice. That was the performance of a horse likely to improve with maturity and experience.
The concern is tactical rather than ability-based. In a stronger-run race he might have been the clear pick, but a slowly-run 5f at Newcastle may leave him vulnerable if ridden cold.
Still, the Fahey yard does well with progressive sprinters and Oisin Orr should be alert to the pace scenario.
Suitability:
Ability: High
Surface: Unknown but should handle it
Pace setup: Slight negative
Progression: Strong
Major danger to the favourite.

Race Assessment & Weighting Factors
For this race, the usual emphasis on finishing speed should be reduced slightly because:
1. The pace forecast is weak
2. The field is small
3. Newcastle 5f can become highly tactical in these circumstances
Greater weighting should therefore be placed on:
Tactical speed
Race fitness
Early positioning
Ability to travel prominently
That notably benefits Zain Primus over Spaceman and possibly Gold Digger.
—
Private Tissue Estimate
Zain Primus – 11/8
Spaceman – 9/4
Gold Digger – 11/4
Project Wallace – 12/1
Qila – 20/1
April Diamond – 66/1
—
Strongest Contenders
Zain Primus
Spaceman
Gold Digger
Main Danger
Spaceman if the pace develops more honestly than expected
Interesting Outsider
Project Wallace on pedigree and stable debutant statistics
Notable Profile Angles
Gold Digger brings the strongest juvenile form
Zain Primus has the strongest recent form and race fitness
Spaceman shaped like a useful prospect on debut
Watch the market carefully on Gold Digger after 333 days off and Project Wallace first time out

Smart Play
WIN:
Zain Primus
The combination of fitness, tactical pace, proven AW form and strong Kempton novice form gives him the most reliable profile in a race likely to be decided by positioning.
Saver:
Spaceman
Potentially the horse with the most upside if improving from two to three and if able to sit closer than expected in the early stages.
Gold Digger commands respect on class but the long absence tempers confidence slightly in a tactical sprint.
