(Class 4, 2m1f, Good)
A small-field tactical handicap chase around sharp Plumpton, where track position and jumping efficiency matter more than raw finishing speed. Good ground over this trip usually favours handy racers who travel comfortably and jump fluently. In four-runner races at Plumpton, pace can become exaggerated tactically; riders often stack the field before increasing pressure from the back straight. Hold-up horses can be disadvantaged if the tempo turns into a sprint.
There is no meaningful draw factor in jumps racing here, but pace positioning is highly relevant. Proven track agility and accurate fencing carry extra weight in this race because several runners arrive with questions over current form or reliability.
The key weighting factors for this race:
1. Chase jumping potential and fluency
2. Tactical pace position
3. Current wellbeing/form
4. Suitability to Plumpton’s sharp nature
5. Ability on good ground
This is less a pure ratings race and more about which runner is most likely to deliver a clean round under tactical conditions.
Main Contenders
SEEYOUINMYDREAMS – 8.5/10 (P) Progressive mare who arrives in excellent order after a wide-margin Hexham seller win. Her hurdle profile is solid for this level and she consistently posts respectable RPRs in the low-to-mid 120s. The major angle is chasing potential: she shaped repeatedly as though fences could unlock improvement and joins a stable operating at 100% strike-rate from limited recent runners.
The concern is that this is her first start over fences at the age of eight around a sharp track where novicey jumping can be punished. However, her overall profile suggests professionalism and she should be able to sit prominently in a race lacking guaranteed pace. Strong contender if taking to fences immediately.
CAPTAIN COOL – 8/10 (p) Progressive type who won on chase debut at Stratford nine days ago. Irish point background always hinted fences would suit and his jumping looked a major asset last time. He is uncomplicated tactically and likely to race handily, which is often ideal at Plumpton.
The negative is the 7lb penalty. His adjusted mark asks for another career best and his hurdle form still leaves him a little shy of Seeyouinmydreams on established ratings. Nevertheless, he is clearly improving and could still have further upside now fully switched to fences. Fast return is not a concern for an in-form chaser.
Main Dangers
FRERE D’ARMES – 6/10 Very dangerous on old form and now extremely well treated if able to revive. His peak chase ratings would comfortably make him competitive in this field and the Skelton/Harry Skelton combination commands respect at these tracks.
However, recent efforts have been poor. Pulled up twice, unseated once and generally lacking spark since returning from a break. Temperament/reliability concerns are now significant and he no longer looks straightforward. The return to handicap company may help, but current evidence says he must prove he retains enthusiasm.
LAKEFIELD FLYER – 5.5/10 Interesting outsider who shaped slightly better back over hurdles at Sligo recently and has bits of chase form that fit here, notably his Stratford third and Downpatrick second last summer.
He does stay this trip well and the return to good ground helps. However, his strike-rate is modest and his fencing can come under pressure when the tempo lifts. In a tactical four-runner race, he may also get caught flat-footed if the principals quicken sharply turning in.
