1m5f16y, Class 4 Handicap, 4yo+, Good to Firm
5 runners
This looks a tactical small-field staying handicap rather than a strongly run stamina test. With only five runners, positioning and pace judgement become especially important. Hamilton’s turning nature and relatively short straight can favour those able to hold a handy position before the bend into the home straight. In small fields here, exaggerated hold-up tactics can become risky if the pace steadies.
There is no major draw bias over this trip in such a small field, although low-to-middle stalls can still help secure economical early position around the first bend. Pace matters more than draw here.
The key question in weighing the race up is whether recent progressive staying form should outweigh class concerns. In this contest, proven stamina and current well-being deserve extra emphasis because several rivals either have stamina queries or arrive out of form.
Strongest contenders
Shipshape (8/10) p
Profile: Progressive staying handicapper.
He has improved since stepping up to around 1m6f, with form figures of 212 on his last three starts. His latest second at Thirsk on good to firm ground reads particularly well in the context of this race and his RPR of 94 is strong for the grade. He appears tactically versatile, which is important in a five-runner event, and Connor Beasley should be able to keep him prominently positioned.
Hamilton should suit his straightforward style and there is no obvious issue with the drop back slightly in trip. The concern is whether this race becomes tactical and turns into a sprint from the home bend, but his current form and profile make him the percentage call.
He is proven, progressive and arrives race-fit.
Gentle Warrior (7.5/10)
Profile: Proven at the trip and dropping into a workable race.
Won twice over staying trips last autumn and returned to form with a solid second at Nottingham last time. His trainer is in strong form and the horse has a touch more class than some of these on peak figures. He has shown he handles good ground and stays thoroughly.
The slight concern is temperament/tactical suitability in a slowly run race. He can race a little lazily and in a small field there may not be enough pace pressure to bring his stamina fully into play. Still, his profile is reliable and his best efforts are highly competitive here.
Main dangers
Raulin (6.5/10)
Profile: Class dropper with stamina to prove.
Interesting runner because he drops from stronger Class 3 company into this Class 4 handicap and is now 4lb lower than at the start of the season. His best form last year came over 1m2f and he shaped only adequately over 1m4f previously, so this extended 1m5f on quick ground asks a fresh question.
The positive is that David O’Meara’s runners can improve sharply once dropped in grade and his RPR ceiling is competitive. However, in a steadily run race, doubtful stayers can become vulnerable late on. He may travel strongly for a long way but does not look the safest finisher.
Ludo’s Landing (5.5/10)
Profile: Capable but inconsistent.
Won a weaker Class 5 comfortably at Newcastle in March but has disappointed twice since. His best efforts suggest he can be competitive from this mark and he has run well at Hamilton before, which is a plus because track suitability matters here.
However, his recent form is hard to trust and his tactical pace in a small-field turf race is questionable. He may need a stronger gallop than seems likely.
Interesting outsider
Furhaan (4.5/10) P
Profile: Unexposed stayer trying to rediscover form.
There is at least some intrigue because he won a handicap on heavy ground last year and remains lightly raced over staying trips. The 5lb claim helps and his mark is workable on old form.
That said, his three runs for Jim Goldie have been poor and he has yet to show he handles this sort of quicker staying test. He would need a revival. The “P” notation applies only because he remains relatively unexposed at staying trips.

Summary
This revolves around the progressive profile of Shipshape against the slightly classier but less straightforward Gentle Warrior. Shipshape arrives in the best current form, has proven stamina, handles quick ground and should get a tactically favourable run. Gentle Warrior rates the principal danger if the pace is honest enough to draw out his stamina.
Raulin is respected on class drop alone but remains vulnerable if this becomes tactical over a trip he has yet to fully prove.
Smart Play
Win: Shipshape
Saver: Gentle Warrior
No each-way recommendation due to only five runners.
