15:00 Fontwell – Sun Racing The Home Of Racing Handicap Chase (Arc Summer Chase Series Qualifier)

·

Class 5 Handicap Chase | 2m3f104y | Good ground | 5yo+ | 6 runners

Race Assessment

Going Suitability

Good ground looks ideal for A Little Something and Gore Point. Both have produced their best recent chase efforts on good or quicker surfaces.

Atreides has done much of his winning on softer ground but has form on good and should not be inconvenienced.

Wellwillya appears more effective when conditions are testing.

Doctor Glide is difficult to assess under Rules given his recent point-to-point wins.

Field Size Suitability

Only six runners.

Atreides has often run well in small fields.

A Little Something won a three-runner event last time.

Gore Point has shown form in fields of varying sizes.

Small fields reduce traffic problems and suit prominent racers.

Forecast Pace

No obvious confirmed front-running tearaway.

Possible pace:

Atreides prominent

A Little Something handy

Gore Point handy/midfield

Doctor Glide could be ridden positively

Wellwillya usually tracks pace

This may become tactical rather than strongly run.

Draw Bias

Not applicable over Fontwell chases.

Pace/Track Interaction

Fontwell’s sharp nature often favours those racing prominently.

Potential advantage:

1. Atreides

2. A Little Something

3. Doctor Glide

Less ideal for any horse dropped out and relying on a strong pace.

Class Suitability

All are proven at Class 5 level.

Atreides has won Class 4 handicaps.

Gore Point has been competitive from higher marks.

A Little Something remains well suited to this grade.

Track Suitability

Atreides – C&D winner.

Wellwillya – course winner.

A Little Something – good Fontwell second in April.

Gore Point – first visit but profile suggests it should suit.

Distance Suitability

2m3f looks ideal for:

A Little Something

Atreides

Doctor Glide

Slight query:

Gore Point has done best work around 2m-2m2f but shapes as though this trip is within range.

Temperament

No major concerns.

Atreides has had the occasional jumping error (unseated last December) but generally reliable.

Trainer & Jockey Angles

Emma Lavelle/Ben Jones operating well and arrive with obvious claims.

Anthony Honeyball/Sam Twiston-Davies is a combination to respect, especially after a break.

Neil Mulholland has his runner back in the visor that sparked two wins.

Have We Weighed The Race Correctly?

Yes, but there are two important points:

1. Footloose Man is a Non-Runner

A significant pace influence and proven course specialist has come out.

That improves the prospects of:

A Little Something

Atreides

Gore Point

2. Handicap Debutant Doctor Glide

This is the difficult horse to assess.

His Rules form is poor, but his recent point-to-point wins suggest he’s a different proposition now. In weak Class 5 company he could easily outrun market expectations.

Runner-by-Runner Ratings

1. A Little Something – 8.5/10 (p)

Progressive chasing mare who finally got her head in front at Stratford. Fontwell second previously reads well in this company. Same mark as last time and conditions ideal.

The concern is whether the latest race flattered her slightly given only one rival completed.

Still the most solid profile.

2. Gore Point – 8/10 (p)

Possibly the best handicapped horse in the race.

Runner-up over fences at Taunton when last seen produced an RPR of 108. Returns after 195 days but Honeyball excels with this type.

Major danger if fit.

3. Atreides – 7.5/10

Reliable and proven over C&D.

Likely to strip fitter for Worcester comeback. Return of the visor is a positive. Consistent rather than progressive but very likely to run his race.

4. Doctor Glide – 6.5/10 (P)

The wildcard.

Recent point wins suggest improvement and he’s making his first handicap chase start. Very hard to trust on previous Rules evidence but has more upside than most of these.

Interesting rather than convincing.

5. Wellwillya – 5/10

Course winner but recent form leaves him with plenty to find. Needs several rivals to underperform.

Strongest Contenders

A Little Something

Doctor Glide (P)

Point-to-point wins indicate much better current wellbeing than his Rules form suggests. Handicap debut brings potential for improvement.

Race Preview

This looks a fairly weak Class 5 handicap chase following the withdrawal of course specialist Footloose Man. The pace does not look strong on paper and that could favour runners able to race prominently around Fontwell’s sharp circuit.

A Little Something arrives after opening her chasing account at Stratford and remains on the same mark. Her previous Fontwell second ties in well with the level required here and she looks the most straightforward candidate.

Gore Point could be the biggest threat. His Taunton second in November produced one of the strongest pieces of recent form on offer and, if ready after his break, he has every chance of improving on his current mark.

Atreides should appreciate the return of the visor and has already demonstrated his liking for Fontwell. His recent Worcester run should have sharpened him up and another solid effort looks likely.

The unknown quantity is Doctor Glide, whose recent point-to-point victories suggest he may be capable of leaving his previous Rules form behind. Market support would be particularly interesting.

Smart Play

Win Bet

A Little Something

Most solid combination of current form, suitability to track, trip and ground.

Saver

Gore Point

Possibly possesses the highest upside in the field and could easily improve beyond this mark if fit after the absence.

Predicted finishing order:

1. A Little Something

2. Gore Point

3. Atreides

4. Doctor Glide

5. Wellwillya

No each-way recommendation as only five runners remain after the non-runner.
