Race Assessment
Going suitability: Good ground looks ideal for most. No obvious going specialists needing significant rain.
Field size suitability: This is a large-field York handicap and previous experience of big-field scenarios is a major positive. Horses such as Quest For Fun, Inspired, Leadman, Lir Speciale, Feel The Need and Orne have recent form in similar cavalry charges.
Pace suitability: Timeform forecasts a strong pace. York’s 7f often rewards those able to travel prominently and finish strongly rather than extreme hold-up performers. The strong pace should help horses that were inconvenienced by traffic in recent York handicaps.
Draw bias: Timeform states N/A. With a large field spread across the track on good ground, I would not make draw a major factor. Pace position is more important.
Pace/draw interaction: Strong pace from multiple quarters should ensure a truly-run race. Low, middle and high all appear workable if obtaining cover and avoiding traffic.
Class suitability: Most are established Class 4 handicappers. Several are now well treated on old form.
Track suitability: York form is a major plus. Quest For Fun, Inspired, Leadman, Feel The Need, Orne and Eligible have all shown they handle the track.
Distance suitability: Proven 7f performers are preferred. A few return to their optimum trip after racing over unsuitable distances recently.
Temperament: In a 21-runner apprentice handicap, straightforward horses are preferred. Sword, Lord Bertie and occasionally Esherann have temperament concerns.
Trainer/Jockey factors:
William Haggas (Great Dream) has excellent York statistics.
K.R. Burke (Inspired) continues to target northern handicaps effectively.
Apprentice claims are significant in a race of this nature.
Have We Weighted the Race Correctly?
The key factors here are:
1. Recent York 7f handicap form.
2. Ability to cope with a strong pace.
3. Big-field handicap experience.
4. Current handicap mark.
I would place more weight than usual on recent York course form, because several runners met in the major 7f handicaps here on 15 and 23 May.
No non-runners are shown in the card provided.

Main Contenders
INSPIRED (IRE) (15) – 8.5/10 p
Strong York form two starts ago when fourth over C&D after repeatedly meeting trouble. Failed to justify favouritism at Wetherby but wasn’t disgraced. Still lightly raced for handicaps and remains capable of better.
QUEST FOR FUN (12) – 8.5/10
C&D winner who was an unlucky third in a 22-runner York handicap last time. Received traffic problems again and arguably should have finished even closer. Very solid claims.
JANNAS JOURNEY (11) – 8/10
Seven-time winner last season. Produced her best run of 2026 when finishing strongly into fourth at Carlisle. Strong pace should suit and she’s well treated if building on that effort.
LEADMAN (6) – 8/10
Excellent second over C&D before a poor run eight days later. The quick turnaround may have caught him out. Dangerous if bouncing back to the earlier York effort.
TOKYO JOE (21) – 8/10 P
Promising profile. Ascot comeback over 6f suggested he wanted further and this return to 7f looks ideal. Only lightly raced and could have more to offer from this mark.
GREAT DREAM (7) – 8/10 P
Haggas runner. Probably needed the Salisbury reappearance. Returns to 7f and remains lightly raced enough to improve.

Main Dangers
CRIMINAL SHORE (16) – 7.5/10 p
Won at Newcastle despite suffering traffic issues. Penalty makes life harder but remains in form.
ORNE (17) – 7.5/10
Third at Wetherby and also ran well over C&D previously. Well handicapped if finally able to end his long losing sequence.
FEEL THE NEED (19) – 7.5/10
Won this race last year and runs from 1lb lower. Latest York run looked too bad to be true and may have been a prep.
COUNT PALATINE (9) – 7/10
Encouraging Carlisle third. Low draw could help him secure a handy position.
LIR SPECIALE (2) – 7/10
Competitive handicap thirds this season before a disappointing Newbury effort. Bounce-back possible.

Interesting Outsiders
OUR HAVANA (5) – 6.5/10
Well handicapped on old form. First run after a breathing operation and lengthy absence. Market support would be significant.
ORIENTAL PRINCE (13) – 6.5/10
Recent run may have sharpened him up. Better than latest bare form.
NATIVE HONEY (20) – 6.5/10 p
Improved when winning at Ayr over a similar trip. Excuse latest run over a shorter distance.

Each-Way Angles (21 runners)
Quest For Fun – solid York form and likely to be finishing strongly.
Jannas Journey – arrives on an upward curve.
Leadman – if forgiven latest run.
Feel The Need – previous race winner from a workable mark.

Summary
This revolves around the recent York 7f handicaps where several of these crossed paths. Inspired and Quest For Fun both had stronger claims than their finishing positions suggest due to traffic problems, while Leadman is easy to forgive after backing up quickly. Tokyo Joe and Great Dream are the interesting unexposed types capable of further progress.
