Going: Good to Yielding
Runners: 13 (Bruant declared non-runner)
Each-way: 1/5 odds, 4 places
Race Assessment
Downpatrick is a tight, undulating circuit where tactical speed and efficient jumping are often important. At this intermediate trip on good-to-yielding ground, horses proven around the track and those capable of travelling prominently tend to hold an advantage over hold-up types who require gaps late on.
With Bruant out, the race loses one recent course winner and the pace picture becomes slightly less obvious. There does not appear to be a confirmed strong gallop, suggesting those able to sit handy may be favoured.
Have We Weighed The Race Correctly?
Non-runner noted: Bruant.
Going is likely suitable for the majority.
Course form should be given slightly more weight than usual at Downpatrick.
Handicap debutants Cooladdi, King Of The Greys and Solar Generation could easily outrun their marks if improving.
Several exposed older handicappers dominate the market; this increases the possibility of a less exposed runner making a significant step forward.

Runner-by-Runner Ratings
1. Arcland – 8/10
Proven: Yes
Track: Course-and-distance winner, excellent Downpatrick profile.
Distance: Ideal.
Going: Fine on good-to-yielding.
Blinkers are an interesting addition. Only 1-17 over hurdles but consistently runs his race here. Gavin Cromwell’s runners demand respect. Strong place claims and a likely pace-positive runner.
—
2. Black Soul – 5/10
Proven: Somewhat
Capable on his day and was travelling well when falling at Tramore. However, recent hurdle form is uninspiring and consistency is lacking. Needs revival.
—
3. Cozone – 7.5/10
Proven: Yes
Won over 2m6f here in March and ran well at Limerick last time. Main concern is whether this shorter trip on drying ground catches him out. Strong stayer who may find events happening quickly.
—
4. Cooladdi – 8/10 (P)
Promising Handicap Debutant
One of the most interesting runners. Early hurdle efforts on good ground were encouraging and his two weaker runs came on softer conditions.
Handicap debut after 175 days off. If the market speaks positively, he becomes a major contender.
—
5. Emesteraye – 8.5/10 (P)
Promising
Excellent handicap debut at Wexford when third of 14 after travelling strongly before fitness appeared to tell late.
Ross O’Sullivan’s yard is in form and improvement is highly likely second start in handicaps. Looks one of the strongest contenders.
—
6. Garnetot – 4.5/10
Blinkers tried.
Has bits of form that would make him competitive but his comeback run was poor and he needs the headgear to transform him.
—
7. Goodie Girl – 6.5/10
Proven
Course winner who beat Arcland here last season. However, she has become difficult to trust after multiple falls and returns from a moderate Flat prep run.
Capable but risky.
—
8. King Of The Greys – 7/10 (P)
Promising Handicap Debutant
RPR of 105 at Down Royal suggests his opening mark may be workable. Unexposed and represents a stable capable of improving handicappers.
Interesting outsider.
—
9. Liceo – 8/10
Proven
Consistent handicap profile. Good third at Tramore last time and remains fairly treated.
The concern is that after eight hurdle starts he may be more exposed than some rivals. Nevertheless, likely to run another solid race.
—
10. Rogue Sea – 6.5/10 (P)
Stable does very well at Downpatrick.
Fell on stable debut when still in contention. Market support that day suggests connections expected a good run. Could improve significantly but remains difficult to assess.
—
11. Solar Generation – 7.5/10 (P)
Martin Brassil runner.
Showed much more on his latest maiden hurdle start and now enters handicaps from a low mark. Hood applied.
One of the more interesting improvers if building on Kilbeggan.
—
12. Typical Thomas – 4/10
Former course winner but now 9yo and appears on the downgrade. Hard to recommend.
—
13. Warm In Gorey – 6.5/10
Proven
Course-and-distance winner. Better signs at Wexford recently and blinkers retained.
Needs further improvement but has enough course form to enter calculations.
—

Summary
The race contains several exposed handicappers but the profile of the contest suggests it may be won by an improver rather than a fully exposed older horse.
Emesteraye produced one of the strongest recent pieces of form in the field on her handicap debut and looks likely to progress. Arcland is the solid course specialist who should run his race again. Cooladdi appeals as the most interesting handicap debutant and could easily outperform his current mark if returning in good order.
