Norfolk Stakes – Pace, Pressure and Potential
The Norfolk looks one of the most fascinating juvenile races of the week. On bare form, Carry The Flag sets the standard after his Curragh Group form received a major lift when Great Barrier Reef landed the Coventry. He is the benchmark.
However, this race could be run at a ferocious tempo. The Wesley Ward fillies bring American speed, while several British and Irish runners also prefer attacking tactics. That scenario makes Star Prospect particularly interesting. His Curragh win over Carry The Flag remains one of the strongest pieces of form in the field, and his Naas defeat is easier to forgive than the market may be suggesting.
Among the less exposed runners, Flight Signal could be anything after a highly impressive Bath debut, while Tribeca brings a maiden formline that continues to improve with every passing week.
For those hunting bigger prices, Mr Macartney is the horse whose finishing effort at Sandown catches the eye. The result doesn’t tell the whole story, and Ascot’s likely pace battle could give him the race shape he needs.
Conclusion: Carry The Flag is the most likely winner, but Star Prospect is the most interesting betting proposition if still available around double-figure odds.
