14:30 Catterick – British EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (5f, Good to Firm)

·

Weather: Mostly cloudy
Going: Good to Firm (Good in places)
Field: 8 runners
Pace Forecast: Even

Race Snapshot

A useful-looking 2yo fillies’ maiden for the grade. The market is focused on three fillies with solid form:

Roots In Touche brings the strongest piece of form from the Hilary Needler.

Minzelle is the expensive Burke-trained filly expected to improve significantly from debut.

Calef has race fitness and her Ripon form is working out well.

The newcomers Warby and Sable Noir look the main threats to the experienced runners.

Likely Race Shape

No obvious confirmed trailblazer.

Expected pace influences:

Minzelle raced prominently and pulled hard at Haydock.

Roots In Touche showed speed after early greenness.

Calef has enough pace for 5f.

Newcomers from Ryan and Easterby yards are likely to be ridden positively.

An even pace should suit the runners with proven finishing effort rather than those who have shown signs of weakening late.

Runner-by-Runner Notes

1. Angel Steps (IRE)

Pointer Map: 👀 Improvement Possible | ❌ Needs More

Showed some early speed at Wetherby before fading. The bare form is modest and she looks a longer-term project.

Verdict: Needs a sizeable step forward.

2. Calef (IRE)

Pointer Map: 📈 Progressive | ⚡ Speedy 5f Type | 💰 Each-Way Interest

Ripon fourth reads better than it first appears. The race has substance and she showed natural speed. Still looked inexperienced and should improve again.

Verdict: Solid contender for the places and not impossible she wins.

3. Ma Fille De Reve

Pointer Map: 👀 Better Than Result | 🧩 Learning Job

Travelled okay for a while at Wetherby before emptying. Could leave that behind but needs a major leap on ratings.

Verdict: More of a future notebook horse than today’s winner.

4. Minzelle (IRE)

Pointer Map: 🚀 Major Improver | ⭐ Class Edge | ⚠️ Temperament Query

Strongly backed on debut and travelled like a good filly. Pulled hard, raced keenly and weakened late over 6f. Drop to 5f on quicker ground could suit perfectly.

Burke’s juveniles often improve plenty from first to second run.

Verdict: Biggest danger to the favourite and arguably the highest upside in the field.

5. Miss Tuite (IRE)

Pointer Map: ❓ Bounce-Back Candidate | ⚠️ Inconsistent

Excellent debut second at Thirsk but disappointing at Nottingham. Hard to know which run is the true level.

Verdict: Capable of outrunning odds but trust is reduced.

6. Roots In Touche (IRE)

Pointer Map: ✅ Proven Form | 🎯 Sets Standard | ⭐ Strong Win Claim

Hilary Needler second is comfortably the best form on offer. She was green early, finished strongly and has already shown she can cope with a competitive environment.

The winner has since advertised the race at Royal Ascot level.

Verdict: Deserves favouritism and sets the benchmark.

7. Sable Noir (IRE)

Pointer Map: 🧬 Interesting Debutante | 📋 Market Watch

Blackbeard filly from a yard capable of producing ready juveniles. Pedigree suggests speed. Wide draw isn’t ideal.

Verdict: Respect if backed.

8. Warby

Pointer Map: 🧬 Sharp Pedigree | 🎯 Good Draw | 👀 Debut Threat

Ardad filly from a speedy family. Stall 1 could be advantageous around Catterick’s sharp 5f. Easterby newcomers often improve for experience but this is one of the more interesting debutants.

Verdict: Best of the newcomers on paper.

Upgrade List

Strong Upgrade

Minzelle – debut effort better than finishing position.

Roots In Touche – already operating at a useful level.

Minor Upgrade

Calef – Ripon run has substance and further progress likely.

Warby – interesting debut profile from favourable draw.

Downgrade List

Miss Tuite – needs to prove Nottingham run was an anomaly.

Angel Steps – form level currently well below principals.

Ma Fille De Reve – likely one for later in the season.

Shortlist

Most Likely Winner

1. Roots In Touche

Main Danger

2. Minzelle

Best Value Alternative

3. Calef

Interesting Outsider

4. Warby

Betting Verdict

Most likely winner: Roots In Touche

The Beverley form is the strongest evidence available and she has already shown a level that should win many ordinary maidens.

From a betting perspective, however, Minzelle may be the value play if the market continues to separate the pair. Her Haydock run screamed “better than the result” and she has the profile of a filly capable of taking a sizeable step forward.

Suggested Approach

Win: Minzelle (if available around 6/4–2/1 or bigger)

Saver/Most Likely Winner: Roots In Touche

Each-Way: Calef at 7/1+ in an 8-runner field

Notebook Entries

Minzelle – Upgrade

Travelled powerfully on debut, raced keenly and still showed ability. Could be significantly better over sharp 5f/6f on fast ground.

Roots In Touche – Tracker

Strong Beverley debut in quality company. Already useful and should remain competitive in better races than this.

Calef – Upgrade

Ripon form may be underestimated. Progressive profile and likely to pick up a maiden soon.

Self-Critique

No sectional times available, limiting assessment of finishing effort.

Draw impact at Catterick can vary with rail position and pace setup.

Market support for either newcomer (Warby or Sable Noir) would be highly significant and could alter rankings.

Summary

This looks primarily a race between Roots In Touche and Minzelle.

Roots In Touche has achieved the most and deserves favouritism.
Minzelle has the strongest improvement angle and may possess the most raw ability.
Calef appeals as the safest each-way alternative.

2. Minzelle

3. Calef

4. Warby

Betting View: Small win bet on Minzelle if the price holds up; otherwise Roots In Touche is the percentage call.
