14:02 Newcastle: Pace, Patience and Value in a Tricky Class 6 Opener
Newcastle’s 14:02 handicap is exactly the sort of Class 6 race where the most obvious horse is not necessarily the best betting proposition. Based arrives as the clear market leader after a breakthrough win at Wolverhampton, but this 7f Tapeta contest has enough pace pressure, exposed rivals and course specialists to make his short price look vulnerable.
The first thing to note is the race shape. Newcastle’s straight 7f often rewards horses who can race handily and keep rolling. The supplied track/distance data strongly supports that view, with front-runners performing especially well. That brings Surgeon Commander, Maynora, Fanjove and possibly Rousham into the early pace picture.
That makes Surgeon Commander particularly interesting. He is 2-2 over this course and distance, and his latest fourth at Doncaster was better than the finishing position suggests, as he was involved early and only faded late after being pressured. Back at Newcastle, he looks one of the more appealing value runners.
Popty Ping is another to take seriously. She is not straightforward from a betting point of view because she tends to be ridden patiently and needs gaps to appear, but her recent comments repeatedly suggest she is running better than the bare results. If the leaders overdo things, she is one of the most likely closers.
Bird Of War also has claims. He is a course winner, shaped better at Bath last time, and Harry Vigors’ 5lb claim helps. The question is whether 7f is sharp enough, but Newcastle’s stiff finish should help him stay involved.
The favourite Based is respected. He won well at Wolverhampton and remains unexposed in handicaps, but he is now 6lb higher and faces a deeper race. At around 15/8, he looks priced as if improvement is guaranteed, which is dangerous in this grade.
Of the others, Saxon Prince is worth a positive mention back on the AW and down to 7f, while Elemma is an interesting handicap debutante if the market speaks. Rousham has ability but comes with temperament concerns after sweating and pulling hard last time.
Verdict
Most likely winner: Based
Best value: Surgeon Commander
Each-way player: Popty Ping
Danger: Bird Of War
At the prices, this is not a race to take a short one. Surgeon Commander at around 8/1 or bigger would be the most appealing bet, with Popty Ping around 7/1+ also fair. Otherwise, this is a race where caution is justified.
