15:47 Newcastle: Back In Black Sets the Standard, But Pace Could Be Key

The 15:47 at Newcastle is a strong Class 2 mile handicap on the Tapeta, and it looks a race where the market has broadly found the right horses. The central question is whether Back In Black deserves to be as short as he is, or whether the likely race shape brings one or two alternatives into play.

Newcastle’s mile generally does not make life easy for habitual slow starters or horses who need everything to drop perfectly. The supplied track-and-distance data shows front-runners and prominent racers have the better strike-rates, while poor starters have struggled badly. That matters here, because several runners like to race forward, including Clouds Hill, Mr Swivell, Dingle and possibly Treble Tee. The pace should be honest.

That scenario could suit Back In Black, who has been admirably consistent. He has finished in the first four on each of his last five starts, including a good fourth in the Spring Cup at Newbury. He travels well, finishes strongly, and remains on a workable mark. His one previous all-weather run was respectable, and the first-time tongue-tie adds another small angle. He is the most likely winner, though odds around 15/8 leave little margin.

The more interesting value horse may be El Matador. He is lightly raced, progressive, and has run well in all three starts this season. The drop back from 1m2f to 1m should be fine if the pace is strong, as he has been finishing his races well. He may still have improvement left and looks a genuine danger to the favourite.

Dosman is another to consider. His best efforts have come on the all-weather, and his late-running style could be suited by this pace setup. He is not straightforward, as he can be slowly away and needs luck in running, but at the right price he has more appeal than several exposed rivals.

Of the bigger-priced runners, Regalian is worth a mention. He was not beaten far on stable debut after meeting some trouble and should be sharper now. He has course form and could outrun his odds if the leaders overdo things.

Several others have questions. Treble Tee has the class but returns from a break, is untried on the all-weather, and needs to prove recent poor efforts can be forgiven. Clouds Hill, Mr Swivell and Dingle all have pace or all-weather credentials, but they could compromise one another up front. Ancient Rome and Al Mubhir are well handicapped on old form but arrive with too much to prove.

The verdict is that Back In Black is the right favourite, but not necessarily the best bet at short odds. El Matador looks the main alternative, while Dosman is the each-way or saver type if available at a fair price. Recommended fair odds: Back In Black 3/1, El Matador 4/1, Dosman 6/1, Regalian 12/1.
