18:07 Newcastle: Barleybrown sets the standard, but Cable Beach may be the value

The 18:07 at Newcastle is a low-grade but interesting 1m Class 6 handicap, run on Tapeta with the going described as standard to slow. Thirteen are set to line up, and the race has a familiar Newcastle look: several hold-up horses, a few exposed closers, and one obvious pace angle in Sassy Glory.

The key piece of form is the recent course-and-distance handicap in which Barleybrown finished second, Abu Royal third, Little Ted fifth and Cable Beach seventh. The bare result does not tell the full story. Barleybrown was hampered at a crucial stage and still hit the line strongly, while Cable Beach also shaped better than his finishing position after meeting trouble before staying on late.

That makes Barleybrown the most obvious winner. He is a four-time C&D winner, clearly handles Newcastle, and remains fairly treated despite a small rise. His profile is solid for this grade, and he has fewer questions than most. The only issue is price: he is no secret after that unlucky latest run.

Woodleigh arrives in the best recent form, having won his last two on turf. He is clearly thriving and finishes his races strongly, but he is 0-11 on the all-weather. That does not make him a lay, but it does make him vulnerable if priced as though he simply repeats his turf form back at Newcastle.

The pace could come from Sassy Glory, who led when second at Beverley last time and has previously won over this C&D. Newcastle’s mile can reward a well-ridden front-runner, and if she gets loose she is dangerous. The concern is her overall 1-30 record and her habit of being caught late.

The most interesting each-way horse is Cable Beach. He had no luck over C&D last time, has useful AW form, and the booking of Robert Havlin catches the eye. He needs the race to set up for a closer, but several in here are unreliable, and he looks capable of outrunning his odds.

Others have claims but come with stronger reservations. Little Ted has ability but can idle under pressure. I Can Boogy is another C&D winner who would benefit from a strong pace, though her recent turf form has been only fair. Abu Royal ran well last time but is hard to trust to repeat it. Oselton, Trais Fluors, Kalikapour, Space Moon and Shimmering Spirit all have enough doubts to oppose.

The verdict is that Barleybrown is the most likely winner, but Cable Beach appeals more as the bet if available at a fair each-way price. Sassy Glory is the pace danger, while Woodleigh is respected but short enough given his AW record.

Recommended fair odds:
Barleybrown 7/2
Cable Beach 8/1
Sassy Glory 7/1
Woodleigh 5/1
