The Carlisle Bell is typically a deep, competitive handicap, and this year’s renewal looks no different. Seventeen runners line up over the extended mile on good to firm ground, with Timeform forecasting a very strong pace. That race shape could prove decisive.
The obvious starting point is Altareq, who has the profile of a better horse than his current mark. His York run last time was too bad to be true, and his earlier efforts for Jim Goldie suggested he has a handicap in him. The concern is the drop back from 1m2f to a strongly run mile. He may be the best horse in the race, but at short odds he does not come without risk.
Leadenhall looks a major player. Tim Easterby’s gelding has won two of his last three starts, remains unpenalised for his latest Nottingham success, and should be suited by a strong pace. The quick four-day turnaround is the only real worry, but his current form makes him hard to dismiss.
Financer, also from the Easterby yard, is another interesting contender. He ran well at York last time, is now on a workable mark, and first-time blinkers could sharpen him up. The drop in trip asks a question, but a well-run race should help bring his stamina into play late. At the prices, he makes more appeal than many.
Priapos has already won over course and distance this season and handles quick ground well. He is reliable and well drawn, though the handicapper has had his say. He looks a solid place contender rather than an obvious blot.
The pace setup is less favourable for Canvas. Stall 1 looked attractive at first glance, but if the leaders go too hard, he could be vulnerable from a prominent position. Lexington Jet and Degale may also suffer if the early fractions become too demanding.
Of the bigger prices, Rajapour is worth a mention. He remains in form and has been shaping as though a win is near, but stall 17 leaves him needing plenty of luck.
Verdict
This looks a race to avoid taking a short price. Altareq may be the most talented, but Leadenhall has the right current profile and Financer looks the value play if the strong pace materialises.
