The Listed Eternal Stakes at Carlisle brings together a fascinating mix of progressive handicappers, established black-type fillies and a handful of lightly raced improvers. Run over 7f on good-to-firm ground, this year’s renewal may be decided as much by race shape as by raw ability.
On official ratings and recent achievements, Ellusive Butterfly arrives with the strongest recent piece of form. Karl Burke’s filly gained a deserved Listed success in the Surrey Stakes at Epsom earlier this month, showing determination to fend off challengers after enjoying a rail-hugging trip. That victory represented a career-best effort and confirmed that she belongs at this level. The question is whether she can reproduce it under different circumstances while conceding 3lb to the field.
The market has installed Albaydaa as favourite following her narrow course-and-distance success in a fillies’ handicap here last month. William Haggas’s filly has progressed steadily through handicaps this season and has already shown she handles Carlisle’s unique test. She travelled the widest route when winning last time and may have achieved more than the margin suggests. However, she now steps from handicap company into Listed class and must prove she can deliver another career-best performance. At a relatively short price, the market appears to be fully aware of her potential.
The most intriguing contender could be Golden Palace. Richard Fahey’s filly was highly tried as a juvenile after winning her first two starts and has gradually worked her way back towards that level. Her latest third in a Musselburgh Listed race was arguably her best performance to date, staying on strongly late in the contest. Carlisle’s stiffer finish looks likely to suit her better than Musselburgh’s sharper track, and a genuinely run race would further enhance her chance. Drawn in stall one, she should be able to secure an economical position before launching her challenge.
A strong pace is widely anticipated, and that could bring Stimulative Trip into the picture. David Menuisier’s filly won impressively on debut before finding Group and Listed company more demanding. Her French Listed run was not without promise, and with only three career starts she remains one of the least exposed runners in the field. If the leaders overdo things, she could be one of those finishing strongest.
Figjam has acquitted herself well in Pattern company this season without quite threatening to win. Her fourth in Listed company at Haydock reads respectably and she has shown enough ability to suggest she is not completely out of place. The concern is a wide draw in stall ten, which could leave her vulnerable to covering extra ground.
The remaining runners all have something to prove. Applesandpears and Just A Girl finished behind Albaydaa over course and distance last month and need further improvement to reverse the form at this higher level. Classic Cuvee wears first-time blinkers after several disappointing efforts in stronger company and is difficult to assess. Confide In Me remains lightly raced and open to progress but faces a substantial class rise, while Assaranca was comfortably behind Ellusive Butterfly at Epsom and looks to have a mountain to climb.
Race Shape
The expected strong tempo could be the defining factor. Carlisle’s 7f often rewards those who can travel comfortably behind the pace and finish strongly up the uphill climb to the line. While front-runners are not automatically disadvantaged, a searching gallop tends to expose any weakness in stamina.
That scenario may favour Golden Palace and Stimulative Trip more than some of their rivals, while Ellusive Butterfly’s ability to cope with a different tactical setup will be tested.
Verdict
Ellusive Butterfly brings the best recent form and is fully respected, while Albaydaa is the obvious improver with strong local credentials. However, from a value perspective, Golden Palace makes the most appeal. Her Musselburgh run suggested she is reaching a new level, the stronger pace should play to her strengths, and Carlisle’s more demanding finish may allow her to produce a career-best effort.
Predicted Finish
1. Golden Palace
2. Ellusive Butterfly
3. Albaydaa
4. Stimulative Trip
Fair Odds
Golden Palace – 4/1
Ellusive Butterfly – 3/1
Albaydaa – 7/2
Stimulative Trip – 8/1
Betting View: Golden Palace is the value play. Ellusive Butterfly remains the most obvious danger, while Albaydaa is respected but looks short enough in the market for a filly making the jump from handicaps into Listed company.
