Pentonville Chases the Hat-Trick in Competitive Leicester Finale

The concluding race on Leicester’s Thursday evening card, the 8.45pm Dr T B Connors Memorial Handicap, may feature only six runners following the withdrawal of Albertini Star, but it offers an intriguing clash between established recent form and potential improvers.

With the going described as good to firm and the race run over 1 mile and 53 yards, tactical speed is likely to be just as important as stamina. Historical data from Leicester suggests horses able to race prominently have an advantage at this trip, particularly in smaller fields where steady early fractions are common.

Pentonville Sets the Standard

All eyes will be on Pentonville, who arrives seeking a quick hat-trick after back-to-back handicap victories at Wolverhampton and Brighton.

Those wins marked a dramatic transformation in form. At Wolverhampton he travelled strongly before putting the race to bed late, while at Brighton he overcame a momentary lack of room before showing an impressive turn of foot to pull clear inside the final furlong.

Although he must shoulder a 12lb penalty, his recent performances suggest he has improved considerably since being allotted his official mark. His ability to settle before finishing powerfully has become a notable feature of his racing style, and if he reproduces either of his last two efforts, he will be difficult to beat.

Station Bar Looks the Main Threat

Station Bar finally shed his maiden tag when winning a three-runner handicap at Bath last month. While the form of that race is open to question, it followed several solid placed efforts and hinted that he is beginning to fulfil earlier promise.

His previous run at Kempton, where he caught the eye staying on from the rear, also suggested there was more ability than the finishing position indicated. If he can secure a prominent position from the outset, he appears the most obvious challenger to the favourite.

Napolian Tries Something Different

Perhaps the most fascinating runner is Napolian, who steps up from sprint distances to a mile for the first time.

His juvenile form over 6f showed plenty of early pace, but he repeatedly found stronger finishers too good late on. Connections now try a completely different test, and his pedigree offers encouragement that the longer trip may unlock improvement.

If settling into an easy rhythm, he could prove better than his current handicap mark suggests.

The Remaining Contenders

Ritaal makes her turf debut after an encouraging seasonal return at Lingfield, where she stayed on from the rear over seven furlongs. The move back up to a mile looks logical, and she has the profile of a filly capable of finding improvement with experience.

Norcross Brow starts for a new stable after changing hands in the spring. Earlier handicap efforts suggested he possesses enough ability to be competitive from his current mark, although his recent form leaves questions to answer.

Venturing, now with Tony Carroll after beginning his career in Ireland, makes his handicap debut. His maiden form has not yet produced a standout performance, but lightly raced three-year-olds can progress once entering handicaps.

Race Tactics Could Be Key

With only six runners, there is unlikely to be a searching early gallop. Napolian and Station Bar appear the most natural pace influences, while Pentonville has the tactical versatility to sit close enough without expending unnecessary energy.

That scenario could suit the favourite perfectly, allowing him to strike when the race develops inside the final two furlongs.

Verdict

Pentonville deserves his place at the head of the market. His recent victories have carried the hallmark of a horse improving faster than the handicapper can react, and although the penalty demands another career-best, there is evidence that he may still have more to offer.

Station Bar rates the principal danger if building on his Bath success, while Napolian is the intriguing outsider whose first attempt at a mile could reveal significant improvement.

Predicted finish:

1. Pentonville

2. Station Bar

3. Napolian

In a race where tactical positioning may prove decisive, the favourite looks the most likely to complete his hat-trick, but the step up in trip for Napolian provides an interesting subplot in the Leicester finale.
