Sports Coach the value call in fiercely-run Newcastle sprint

The 20:03 Newcastle looks a proper Class 5 sprint puzzle, with 14 runners over 5f on standard-to-slow Tapeta and several arriving with plausible claims.

Ancient State is the obvious starting point. He is 4lb well-in after bolting up at Newmarket last week and his AW 5f record reads very strongly. The concern is price. He was visually impressive on turf, but this is a deeper, sharper race and he can be slowly away.

The likely pace comes from Miss Rainbow, Tanjen and Call To Action, which should make this a fair test. That brings Sports Coach firmly into play. His recent form figures do not sparkle, but he has been contesting stronger races, including Class 2 and Class 3 company, and now drops into a Class 5 back on the AW. He is also 4lb below his Southwell winning mark from March, so he is better treated than the bare form suggests.

Little Mi Mi is another to respect. She has improved this year, has already won over course and distance, and her recent defeats came in better company. Tiriac is more risky because he can blow the start, but he is well handicapped on his late-2025 Newcastle wins and Paul Midgley has a good recent record in this race.

At bigger prices, Tanjen is interesting because her AW form is much stronger than her turf record, while Maldevious has each-way claims if first-time cheekpieces help her cope with the drop to 5f.

The most likely winner is Ancient State, but the value lies with Sports Coach, especially if available around 7/1 or bigger. This is not a race to be overconfident in, but Sports Coach looks the one whose chance may be underestimated by recent form figures.
