Tickets Can Punch Back at Newcastle

The 20:38 at Newcastle is a typical Class 6 sprint: competitive, slightly messy, and full of horses with questions to answer. That makes race shape and price more important than simply finding the “best” horse.

The pace should be honest. Angel Of England, Ridgemaster, She’s A Goldigger, Tickets and Little Beck Annie can all race close enough to the speed, while several others are likely to need luck from off the pace. On Newcastle’s straight 6f, that should give every style a chance, but traffic in a 14-runner field is a real concern.

Tickets looks the most persuasive contender. He is a three-time Newcastle winner, has run well over course and distance this year, and now returns on a career-low mark for a new yard in a first-time tongue-tie. His recent form away from Newcastle was not flashy, but it was not disastrous either. Back at this venue, he has the right kind of profile for a low-grade handicap: proven conditions, workable mark, and a plausible reason for improvement.

Little Beck Annie is the obvious danger after winning well at Carlisle in first-time cheekpieces. She travelled into that race smoothly and won going away, so a 5lb penalty may not stop her if the headgear works again. The caution is that it was one clear step forward after a modest profile, so she needs to prove she can repeat it.

The value alternative could be Haworth Star. His overall strike-rate is poor, but his only win came over this course and distance and Tapeta clearly suits him better than turf. His reappearance at Bath was not hopeless, and he is now back in more suitable conditions off a handy mark. He is the type who can outrun dismissive odds.

Ridgemaster also has claims. He has returned to form with good recent efforts at Ripon and Ayr, and his sole win came at Newcastle. He is not bombproof, but he arrives in better heart than most. Summer Rain is another worth noting: his latest Beverley run was better than the bare result after racing wide and failing to settle, and the drop back to 6f may help.

Others have something to prove. Jkr Cobbler is in form but looks more comfortable over 7f. Angel Of England can travel well but often weakens late. Miners Gamble is dropping sharply in trip after running over further and may need watching this time.

The verdict is Tickets as the most likely winner, with Haworth Star the more interesting each-way angle at a price. Fair odds: Tickets around 5/1, Little Beck Annie 6/1, Haworth Star 8/1, Ridgemaster 8/1, Summer Rain 12/1.
