Paborus the Intriguing Angle as Diligent Harry Defends His Crown in the Chipchase

The Jenningsbet Chipchase Stakes (Group 3) at Newcastle brings together a fascinating mix of established Group performers, progressive sprinters and one particularly intriguing returnee in Paborus, who attempts to make a winning comeback after almost a year off the track.

Run over Newcastle’s demanding straight six furlongs on Tapeta, the Chipchase has developed into one of the premier all-weather Pattern races of the season, and this year’s renewal looks as competitive as ever.

Diligent Harry Sets the Standard

Last year’s winner Diligent Harry arrives with perhaps the most solid profile in the field. Clive Cox’s veteran sprinter has enjoyed another productive campaign on artificial surfaces, winning twice before producing creditable efforts in higher-grade turf contests at Newmarket and York.

His ability to travel strongly and maintain a high cruising speed has always made him particularly effective at Newcastle, and the defending champion looks almost certain to give another bold account from a prominent position.

If he reproduces the form that saw him win this race twelve months ago, he will take plenty of beating.

Heavenly Heather Continues Her Rise

One of the most appealing stories in the race is the continued progression of Heavenly Heather.

A three-time Newcastle winner, Tracy Waggott’s mare has steadily climbed the ranks from handicaps into Pattern company and arguably produced the best performance of her career when finishing sixth in the King’s Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot just eleven days ago.

That effort came in a 26-runner Group 1 sprint and suggested she belongs at this level. Returning to a track she knows exceptionally well, she arrives in peak condition and looks capable of making her presence felt once again.

The Paborus Question

The race’s most fascinating runner is undoubtedly Paborus.

Edward Bethell’s five-year-old has raced only seven times but has won four of them, leaving the impression there may still be untapped potential. He announced himself as a horse of Pattern-race calibre when bolting up on his seasonal reappearance at Thirsk before following up with an excellent third in a York Group 3.

That York performance came almost exactly a year ago and remains the key piece of form underpinning his chance here.

The obvious concern is the absence. Few horses can be expected to return at their very best after 364 days away from the racecourse. However, Paborus has won first time out in each of the last two seasons, and his profile suggests he remains open to further improvement.

The drop from seven furlongs to six is another unknown, but Newcastle’s stiff finish should help a horse who has typically travelled strongly before quickening.

Class Acts Seeking Revival

Several runners bring high-class form but also notable questions.

Marvelman, a Group 2 winner over seven furlongs last season, possesses arguably the strongest piece of Pattern-race form in the field. However, he carries a penalty, returns from a break and drops back in trip, all factors that add complexity to his task.

Symbol Of Honour also boasts Group-winning credentials, having landed a Haydock Group 2 last year. His Dubai campaign failed to ignite, but Charlie Appleby’s runners are never easily dismissed and the switch to Newcastle’s Tapeta surface could prove beneficial.

Meanwhile, Noble Champion remains difficult to assess. His Jersey Stakes victory at Royal Ascot last summer would make him a major player, yet his two subsequent appearances have been disappointing. If he can rediscover that level of form, he is dangerous; if not, he may struggle to feature.

AW Specialists and Outsiders

The likes of Ferrous, Wiltshire, Poet Master, Zoum Zoum and Heathcliff all have enough ability to be competitive, but each appears to require either improvement or a return to previous bests.

Ferrous was third in this race last year and is a dependable all-weather performer, while Wiltshire’s impressive Good Friday victory over course and distance demonstrates his liking for Newcastle. However, both need to prove they belong in this grade.

Verdict

The Chipchase often rewards proven all-weather performers, which naturally places Diligent Harry high on any shortlist. His course record, current form and tactical versatility make him the safest option in the race.

Yet from a betting perspective, Paborus is the horse who generates the most interest. Lightly raced, potentially still improving and already capable of competing at Group level, he arrives with the profile of a horse who could take another step forward if returning fully fit.

Heavenly Heather appeals as the value alternative, bringing strong recent form and outstanding Newcastle credentials.

Predicted 1-2-3

1. Paborus

2. Diligent Harry

3. Heavenly Heather

Horses to Follow

Paborus – Potentially still ahead of the handicapper and ratings.

Heavenly Heather – Continues to improve with racing.

Diligent Harry – Remains one of the most reliable all-weather sprinters in training.

The Chipchase may not feature a standout star, but it offers an intriguing clash between proven class and untapped potential, with Paborus attempting to show that a year on the sidelines has done little to diminish his promise.
