Confucius Sets the Standard in Compact but Intriguing Anglesey Stakes
The Group 3 Jebel Ali Racecourse And Stables Anglesey Stakes at the Curragh may have attracted only six runners, but it remains a fascinating test for some of Ireland’s most promising two-year-olds. Run over just beyond six furlongs on good ground, the race is headed by a colt whose Royal Ascot performance has already marked him down as a juvenile of considerable ability.
Coventry Form Looms Large
Much of the pre-race discussion centres on Confucius, Aidan O’Brien’s son of No Nay Never. Expensive, well-bred and highly regarded from the outset, he has done little wrong in three starts.
After going down narrowly on debut over this course and distance in testing conditions, he quickly made amends with a decisive maiden victory at Naas. His reputation was then put to the test in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he finished a creditable sixth behind stablemate Great Barrier Reef in one of the strongest juvenile contests of the season.
While sixth place may not immediately leap from the page, the strength of the race and the quality of the horses around him suggest it was a performance of genuine merit. Returning to calmer waters at Group 3 level, he brings the strongest established form into the race.
The only question mark is whether a relatively quick return following a demanding Ascot assignment leaves him vulnerable, but on ratings and evidence he is the horse they all have to beat.
Immortal Guard Looks the Main Threat
If there is a runner capable of exposing any weakness in the favourite, it may be Immortal Guard.
The Robson De Aguiar-trained colt won his maiden at the Curragh before stepping into Group company in the Marble Hill Stakes, where he produced a highly encouraging third-place finish. That form ties in reasonably well with several of Ireland’s leading juveniles, and he remains one of the less exposed runners in the field.
Unlike some of his rivals, he arrives without the exertions of Royal Ascot behind him and may still have significant improvement to come after only two career starts. In a race lacking depth beyond the favourite, he looks the most likely challenger.
The Mystery of Mr Predicted
Every juvenile Group race has room for an unknown quantity, and here that role falls to Mr Predicted.
The Joseph O’Brien-trained colt has yet to race but has already generated interest through his sales history and connections. A $200,000 yearling who later fetched $300,000 as a two-year-old, he represents powerful ownership and a stable not known for wasting entries.
Throwing an unraced colt straight into Group company is a bold move, suggesting connections hold him in high regard. Whether raw talent can compensate for inexperience remains to be seen, but he is arguably the most intriguing runner in the field.
Looking Beyond the Headline Names
The Harv may offer more substance than his Coventry Stakes finishing position suggests. A debut winner at Goodwood, he endured a difficult passage at Ascot and never had the chance to show his full ability. While improvement is needed, he is not easily dismissed.
Ballinea Star, the sole filly in the line-up, arrives after opening her account at Cork. She faces a much sterner examination here but receives the customary weight allowance and remains open to progress.
British raider Dandyman Dan completes the field. A maiden winner at Bath and respectable performer in Listed company, he needs to find another level to trouble the principals but should appreciate a return to quicker ground.
Tactical Battle Could Be Important
With only six runners declared, the Anglesey Stakes may develop into a tactical affair rather than a searching test of stamina. Positioning and acceleration could prove decisive, particularly if no runner is committed to forcing a strong pace.
That scenario would favour horses with proven tactical speed, another factor working in Confucius’s favour given his experience in top-class company.
Verdict
Small fields can sometimes produce unpredictable results, especially among two-year-olds, but this renewal appears to revolve around one horse. Confucius has already demonstrated Group-level ability against elite opposition and returns to a race where his form sets a clear standard.
Immortal Guard appeals as the most likely horse to chase him home, while The Harv could prove the value alternative if improving from his Ascot experience.
The Anglesey Stakes has often served as a stepping stone towards bigger juvenile prizes later in the season. Whether Confucius can confirm himself among Ireland’s leading youngsters is the central question, and the answer may tell us plenty about the shape of the two-year-old division for the remainder of the summer.
