Copacabana Sands Faces Tactical Test in Competitive Queen Charlotte Fillies’ Stakes at Chester
The Queen Charlotte Fillies’ Stakes (Listed) at Chester on Saturday may not be the deepest Pattern race of the season, but it brings together an intriguing mix of established Listed performers, improving handicappers and mares looking to confirm recent resurgence.
With the withdrawals of Forty Years On and Temperance, the field has cut up slightly, leaving a nine-runner contest over Chester’s sharp and often tactical seven furlongs. On good ground and around one of Britain’s most idiosyncratic tracks, positioning and racecraft could prove just as important as raw ability.
Copacabana Sands Looks the Class Act
The horse with the strongest form credentials is undoubtedly Copacabana Sands. Last season she progressed through the Irish fillies’ ranks, landing a Listed race at Naas before following up in Group 3 company at Leopardstown. Those victories established her as a smart seven-furlong performer capable of competing at a higher level than most of Saturday’s rivals.
Her British debut for Andrew Balding at Lingfield in May was underwhelming, finishing fifth in a Group 3, but that was her first start for a new yard and came on quicker ground than ideal. If that effort is treated as a reintroduction rather than a true reflection of her ability, she sets the standard on historical form.
The question is whether she can reproduce her Irish form around Chester’s tight bends and tactical layout.
Circe Seeks to Follow Up
Recent form points firmly towards Circe, who returned to something like her best when winning a Listed contest at Musselburgh earlier this month. That victory came at the expense of several rivals she meets again here, notably Magic Basma, La Brodeuse and Brazilian Rose.
Richard Hannon’s mare has been a consistent performer in Pattern company throughout her career and has the added advantage of drawing stall one. Around Chester, that could be a significant asset, allowing Sean Levey to secure a prominent position before the field reaches the first bend.
The downside is the 3lb penalty she must carry for that Listed success, which narrows the gap between herself and those she beat at Musselburgh.
Magic Basma Continues to Knock on the Door
Few runners arrive with a more dependable profile than Magic Basma. Kevin Ryan’s filly has finished runner-up in Listed races at Haydock and Musselburgh this season, proving herself effective at both six and seven furlongs.
She meets Circe on 3lb better terms than at Musselburgh and there is little doubt she will once again give her running. While she may lack the upside of some rivals, consistency is a valuable commodity in races of this nature and another placed effort would come as no surprise.
Bellarchi’s Rise Through the Ranks
One of the most interesting contenders is Bellarchi, who has enjoyed a remarkable progression through handicap company this season. Grant Tuer’s mare arrives seeking a fourth victory from her last five starts and has looked better than ever in recent weeks.
Her previous visit to Chester resulted in a below-par effort, but a wide draw offered a legitimate excuse. This assignment asks a much tougher question, stepping from handicaps into Listed company, yet her current wellbeing and ability to race prominently make her a fascinating outsider.
If there is a horse capable of taking another step forward, Bellarchi may be the one.
Others Need a Revival
Several runners possess form that would bring them into contention but arrive with something to prove.
La Brodeuse made an excellent start for Kevin Ryan when second in the Group 3 Chartwell Stakes at Lingfield but failed to build on that effort at Musselburgh.
Dash Of Azure was unlucky not to win a Listed race at Ascot last autumn but has failed to fire in two starts this year and now faces the additional challenge of a difficult draw.
Meanwhile Royalty Bay, Beaujolais Nouveau and Brazilian Rose all enter the race in decent form but must improve significantly on their current ratings to trouble the principals.
Tactical Battle Could Decide the Outcome
Chester often rewards horses that secure early track position, and with no obvious confirmed front-runner, the race may become a tactical affair rather than a true test of stamina.
That scenario would play into the hands of horses such as Circe and Bellarchi, who are capable of racing prominently. Conversely, any runner forced wide around the bends could quickly find themselves at a disadvantage.
As a result, the draw and the opening furlong may have a larger influence on the outcome than in a conventional straight-track seven-furlong contest.
Verdict
The race revolves around whether Copacabana Sands can recapture the level of form she showed in Ireland last season. If she does, she is arguably the most talented horse in the field and deserves favouritism.
However, Circe commands respect after her Musselburgh victory, while Magic Basma once again looks a strong candidate to hit the frame. For those searching for a value alternative, Bellarchi is the progressive runner capable of outrunning her odds.
In a race where tactical positioning will be crucial, expect a tightly contested finish between proven Listed performers and an improving mare eager to prove she belongs at this level.
