Pontefract 5.00 Preview: Can Ideal Guest Make His Pace Advantage Count?
The 5.00 at Pontefract, the Wilfred Underwood Memorial Handicap, may only be a Class 6 sprint worth just over £3,400 to the winner, but it presents an interesting clash between proven front-runners and a collection of horses who do their best work late.
With only eight runners declared for this 6f contest on good ground, tactics could prove decisive.
Pontefract’s Pace Bias Could Be Key
Historical data from the last 400 Pontefract races over 6f paints a very clear picture. Horses that lead early have enjoyed a strike rate of over 21%, while hold-up performers have struggled badly, winning less than 6% of the time.
That statistic immediately brings Ideal Guest into focus.
Harriet Bethell’s seven-year-old made much of the running over course and distance eight days ago before being caught close home after arguably committing for home too soon. The handicapper has left him on the same mark and Ethan Tindall’s valuable 5lb claim effectively leaves him racing from a lower figure.
From stall 8 he has options. If allowed to dictate matters at his own tempo, he could prove difficult to reel in.
The concern is familiar. Several of his recent races have followed a similar script: travelling strongly before weakening in the final furlong. Connections will need to judge the fractions carefully.
Can the Closers Defy the Track Bias?
Several rivals arrive with profiles that suggest they would ideally like a stronger pace than Pontefract often allows.
Big Apple Jack
Michael and David Easterby’s four-year-old remains a maiden but has shown enough to suggest he is capable of winning a race of this nature.
His recent form figures do not tell the full story. Run comments repeatedly reference late headway, strong finishes and occasions when he has met traffic at crucial stages.
The downside is that he frequently finds himself towards the rear in the early stages, a tactic that has historically been difficult to pull off over this course and distance.
If the leaders overcook the pace he is one of the most likely horses to capitalise.
Superstorm
Charlie Fellowes’ three-year-old has slipped 7lb from his opening handicap mark and returns to 6f after a sequence of respectable efforts over 7f.
He has shaped as though this drop in trip could suit and Jason Hart is an eye-catching booking. However, much like Big Apple Jack, he tends to race patiently and may need the race to unfold in his favour.
Full Gas
Kevin Ryan’s representative has shown his best recent form over 6f and was a staying-on second at Haydock in April.
His problem has often been settling. When ridden patiently and switched off, he has looked capable of better than his current rating of 57. If the leaders engage in an early battle, Full Gas could emerge as a late threat.
The Value Alternative
Perhaps the most interesting runner at the prices is Lady Bouquet.
Philip Kirby’s mare has been shaping as though a return to 6f would suit after a pair of respectable efforts over 5f. She was a close fourth at Pontefract earlier this month and has winning form over today’s distance.
Unlike some of the stronger finishers in the field, she possesses enough tactical speed to secure a prominent position, an attribute that could be particularly important around Pontefract.
At around 5/1 or bigger, she makes greater appeal than several rivals whose running styles may be working against them.
Others in the Field
Great Success returns to the scene of one of his better efforts and is not entirely dismissed, although his handicap form has been patchy.
Ganthorpe gained his first success at Carlisle on his penultimate start but failed to build on it next time and still has questions to answer.
Kyber Crystal is attractively handicapped and has a favourable inside draw, but most of her best form has come over 5f and she has become difficult to trust.
Verdict
The race appears likely to revolve around Ideal Guest. He has the pace profile, recent course form and weight allowance to make him the most logical winner, provided he is not sent for home too early.
For those looking beyond the favourite, Lady Bouquet stands out as the value option. Her recent form suggests she is ready to be competitive again, and her ability to race handily could prove a major asset.
