Pimentel and Norcross Brow Headline Intriguing Brighton Handicap
The 17:15 at Brighton may only feature six runners following the withdrawal of Pretty Danielle, but it looks a more competitive contest than the field size suggests. The Class 6 handicap over 7f brings together several lightly raced three-year-olds whose recent form offers differing levels of encouragement.
Norcross Brow Seeks to Build on Stable-Debut Revival
The likely favourite, Norcross Brow, arrives after a much-improved effort on his first start for Charlie Clover. Having shown little in several starts earlier in the year, he bounced back to finish third at Newmarket on Friday, travelling well and sticking on in the closing stages.
That performance suggested his new yard may have found the key to him, and he enters this race from a workable mark. The concern for supporters is whether he can reproduce that effort only four days later and whether his tendency to keep on at one pace leaves him vulnerable in a tactical contest.
Brighton Specialist Pimentel Has Strong Claims
If there is a horse with obvious conditions in her favour, it is Pimentel. Marcus Tregoning’s filly won over this course and distance on good-to-firm ground last September and returned from a lengthy absence with an encouraging second at Chepstow on Saturday.
That run suggested she retains ability and may even be capable of better now that race fitness has been restored. The return to Brighton and a slightly longer trip both look positives. Her profile contains more upside than most of these rivals and she appeals as the runner most likely to improve on recent form.
Venetian Romance Could Be Dangerous From the Front
One of the more interesting runners is Venetian Romance, who has shown flashes of ability without yet putting everything together. Her fourth at Leicester in April came from a mark 5lb higher than the one she races from here, and that performance reads well in the context of this race.
She has led in the past and could be the horse to dictate the pace. If allowed to settle into a comfortable rhythm around Brighton’s unique contours, she may prove difficult to pass. However, several of her races have followed a similar pattern of travelling well before weakening late.
Questions for the Others
Electrocution has been campaigned exclusively on the all-weather, winning at Wolverhampton in February before producing a series of respectable efforts in defeat. His hold-up style has served him well in stronger-run races, but Brighton’s turning 7f and a potentially modest pace may not play to his strengths on his turf debut.
Credit Forgedd It makes his first appearance for Simon Dow after changing hands earlier in the year. His best effort came when narrowly beaten at Wolverhampton in December, but he returns from a five-month absence and arrives with something to prove.
Miss Starlet showed promise as a juvenile but has yet to build on it this season. A falling handicap mark offers some hope, but recent performances have not suggested an immediate return to form.
How the Race Could Be Run
A fascinating aspect of the race is the likely pace scenario. Venetian Romance and Credit Forgedd It are the most obvious candidates to race prominently, while Norcross Brow and Pimentel should secure good stalking positions just behind them.
Electrocution and Miss Starlet are more likely to be ridden patiently, but in such a small field they could find themselves at a tactical disadvantage if the leaders are allowed an easy time.
Verdict
Norcross Brow brings the strongest recent form and is the most obvious winner on paper. However, his likely market position leaves little room for error.
Pimentel appears the most interesting runner. She is proven at Brighton, handles quick ground, shaped well on her recent return and should get a race run to suit. If building on her Chepstow second, she may have enough improvement to reverse favouritism.
Predicted Finishing Order
1. Pimentel
2. Norcross Brow
3. Venetian Romance
4. Electrocution
5. Credit Forgedd It
6. Miss Starlet
Fair Odds
Pimentel – 3/1
Norcross Brow – 11/4
Venetian Romance – 5/1
Electrocution – 7/1
Credit Forgedd It – 8/1
Miss Starlet – 12/1
A small-field handicap often turns on tactics, but Pimentel looks the runner with the right blend of course form, recent encouragement and scope for further progress.
