18:45 Kempton Preview: Pace Holds the Key in 7f Fillies’ Handicap
Kempton’s 18:45 is a competitive Class 5 fillies’ handicap over 7f, but the shape of the race has become clearer after the withdrawals of Dream Illusion and Emery Down. Both were likely closers, and their absence strengthens the case for those able to race near the pace.
The key angle is Kempton’s 7f profile. Historic track-and-distance data strongly favours front-runners, with leaders winning at a far higher rate than hold-up horses. That makes the early battle crucial.
Tronido is the obvious pace angle. She is a C&D winner and produced a career-best Racing Post Rating when making all at Lingfield last month. Her best efforts come when allowed to get into a rhythm on the lead. The concern is that she may not get things all her own way, but with the main closers out, she now looks the one they may all have to catch.
Hamaleel is the main danger from a similar run-style perspective. She made all over 1m here in January and has remained in solid form since. She was second at Lingfield last time and third over this C&D in May. She is edging up the weights, but her front-running style is a major positive for this setup.
Trio also has claims. She has been consistent in handicaps and drops into 0-70 company, but her wide draw is awkward for a filly who likes to race handily. She may need to be used early to get position, which could make the finish harder.
The most interesting improver could be Show Me Gold. She was runner-up over this C&D in January and now makes her handicap debut from a workable opening mark. Her latest turf run was below par, but returning to the AW may suit, and she receives weight from the older mares.
Of the older, more exposed runners, Daisy Roots is respected from stall 1. She has solid Polytrack form and could bounce back from a poor turf run. Ironist is consistent and may run on late, but her style is not ideal if the race favours those ridden forward.
Others have more to prove. Something Coming has ability but a slow-starting profile is a major negative over this course and distance. Brave Byreflection has been weakening too often in recent starts, while Searchingtheblues and Mehmas Engine need to show more.
The verdict is that Tronido is the most appealing win candidate if she can dominate or sit close without over-racing. Hamaleel is the obvious alternative, while Show Me Gold looks the most interesting each-way or extra-place option.
Suggested fair odds:
Tronido 5/1
Hamaleel 6/1
Show Me Gold 8/1
Trio 8/1
Daisy Roots 10/1
