Lenebane Stakes Set for Tactical Battle at Roscommon
The Listed Irish EBF Lenebane Stakes at Roscommon may only have attracted eight runners, but it promises to be a fascinating contest in which race tactics could prove every bit as important as raw ability.
At first glance, the market is dominated by the high-class Starford, whose official rating of 111 makes him one of the standout performers in the field. However, a closer look at the likely race shape suggests this may not be a straightforward assignment for the favourite.
The pace map points strongly towards Counting Coup being the horse most likely to lead. Although lightly raced, his two available run-comment profiles indicate a natural tendency to race prominently and force the pace. In a race lacking obvious front-runners, he could find himself enjoying an uncontested lead around a track where tactical advantages can be magnified.
Behind him, Abbey Actress, Bosphorus Rose, and Dreamkeeper are expected to occupy the prime stalking positions. All three have recent form showing a preference for racing handily, and they appear the most likely runners to track the leader through the opening mile.
Among that trio, Abbey Actress is particularly interesting. Her recent victories have come when ridden much closer to the pace than earlier in her career, and she looks ideally positioned to receive a perfect tow into the race before making her challenge entering the straight. In a contest where early fractions may not be especially strong, that tactical setup could prove invaluable.
Bosphorus Rose arrives with strong Listed and Pattern-race credentials and has consistently raced prominently throughout her career. She should have no difficulty securing a good position from her wide draw and appears likely to be among the first runners applying pressure to the leader.
The market leader Starford undoubtedly possesses the strongest recent form, but his run comments reveal a horse that is typically ridden patiently before producing a late challenge. While that style has served him well in the past, it leaves him vulnerable if the pace develops more slowly than expected. In steadily run middle-distance races, class can sometimes be neutralised by race position, and Starford may need luck as well as ability to reel in rivals who have enjoyed softer trips near the front.
A similar concern applies to Shaool, whose profile is that of a genuine closer. Multiple recent runs feature comments such as “towards rear,” “raced in rear,” and “never nearer,” suggesting she will again be ridden patiently. If the leaders are allowed to dictate comfortable fractions, she could find herself facing an impossible task from the back of the field.
Defending champion Chally Chute is another intriguing contender. Last year’s winner has shown versatility in his racing style and should secure a midfield position before attempting to work his way into contention. His proven liking for Roscommon is a major positive, and he may be better equipped than some of the deeper closers if the race develops into a tactical affair.
The likely scenario sees Counting Coup establishing an early lead, with Abbey Actress, Bosphorus Rose, and Dreamkeeper tracking closely behind. The pace does not appear strong enough to create a severe stamina test, making positioning and timing crucial as the field swings for home.
While Starford brings the strongest credentials, the race may be shaped by the horse controlling proceedings rather than the horse with the highest rating. If Counting Coup is allowed to dictate, he could prove difficult to pass, while Abbey Actress looks ideally placed to challenge at the decisive moment.
In a race where tactical nuance may outweigh outright ability, the Lenebane Stakes has all the ingredients of a compelling and strategically fascinating contest.
