Newport Set To Benefit From Honest Pace In Stratford Handicap Hurdle

The 7:48 at Stratford, the Davisons Law Moving You Forward Handicap Hurdle over 2m3f, looks set to be decided as much by race shape as raw ability, with several runners possessing forward-going tendencies and a handful of strong closers waiting to capitalise should the leaders overdo things.

From a tactical perspective, the race appears likely to be run at an honest tempo. Zhang Fei, Yanka Blue and Winstons Oath have all shown a willingness to race prominently or force the pace in recent outings, making an uncontested lead unlikely.

Zhang Fei is the most obvious pace angle. His recent record contains several examples of making the running, including a front-running victory and multiple efforts where he led before weakening late. Connections may feel his best chance again lies in attacking from the outset, but he could face company early.

Yanka Blue has also been ridden aggressively in recent starts and has attempted to dictate on more than one occasion, while Winstons Oath has frequently raced prominently and occasionally taken up the lead before fading. Their presence should ensure the leaders cannot settle into an easy rhythm.

Just behind the likely pace sit Western Soldier and Katzoff. Neither is a natural front-runner, but both have regularly raced close to the speed and could secure favourable stalking positions if the race unfolds as expected.

The horse who appears best positioned tactically is Newport. Unlike several rivals, he has developed a consistent pattern of racing in midfield before making ground through the race. His recent form is full of comments describing measured progress from off the pace, often moving into contention from three or four hurdles out before finishing strongly.

That profile looks particularly attractive in a race where the principal pace-setters have a history of weakening once challenged. If the leaders begin to tire approaching the home turn, Newport should have every opportunity to move into striking position.

Another runner likely to be suited by the anticipated setup is Stellarmasterpiece. Sean Bowen’s mount habitually races towards the rear before staying on late, and his recent victory came after being delivered from off the pace. He may find himself with plenty to do turning for home, but a strongly-run race would play directly to his strengths.

Charlie My Boy is another who could be finishing late. His recent efforts suggest he is most effective when produced from the back of the field, and he may pick up tired horses if the pace collapses in the closing stages.

Conversely, the race shape may not favour some of the likely early leaders. Zhang Fei has repeatedly shown a tendency to weaken after forcing the pace, while Yanka Blue has struggled to sustain her effort once headed. Winstons Oath also has several recent runs where prominent racing tactics resulted in late losses of momentum.

The key tactical question is whether one of the front-runners can secure an easy lead. On balance, that appears unlikely. With at least three runners expected to be prominent from flagfall, the race should develop into a proper test rather than a steadily-run tactical affair.

As they approach the final bend, Newport looks the horse most likely to be travelling strongly in behind the leaders, with Stellarmasterpiece attempting to launch a challenge from further back. If the projected pace unfolds as expected, the race may set up perfectly for a stalking runner rather than a front-runner.

Predicted Tactical Outcome

1. Newport
2. Stellarmasterpiece
3. Charlie My Boy

Likely Leader: Zhang Fei

Likely Turning For Home In Front: Newport

Most Favoured By The Pace: Newport

Pace Verdict: An honest gallop created by several forward-going runners should provide the ideal platform for a strong-travelling midfield racer. Newport appears the runner most likely to benefit from the anticipated race shape.
