16:40 Nottingham Pace Preview: Wadacre Geisha Can Make The Bias Count

·

The 16:40 at Nottingham is a Class 6 handicap over 1m2f, and from a tactical perspective it looks a race where early position could matter greatly. The historical pace data for Nottingham over this trip is clear: front-runners have a notable edge, with a 17.1% strike-rate compared with just 7.6% for held-up runners.

That immediately brings Wadacre Geisha into focus. She is the most reliable pace angle in the race, having led in two recent Beverley handicaps and shown the ability to sustain that position deep into the final furlong. Her latest short-head defeat over this trip was another strong effort, and she runs from the same mark here. The concern is that she may not get things entirely her own way, as Phantom Shadow has also led recently and is drawn close by in stall 9.

Even so, Wadacre Geisha looks the more natural and dependable front-runner. Phantom Shadow has shown pace but has also faded after leading, whereas Wadacre Geisha has repeatedly carried her speed further. If she breaks cleanly, she should be able to cross into a prominent or leading position and make full use of the track bias.

Rugby Union is tactically interesting. His latest run at Wetherby, where he raced in the front rank before fading late, suggested he may be ready to improve. From stall 4, he could get an ideal stalking position behind the pace. He is a danger if Wadacre Geisha and Phantom Shadow take each other on too hard.

Mohmentous is respected on form, but his usual pattern is to race midfield before making progress. That has worked well over a mile, but this race setup may not be quite as favourable unless the leaders overdo it. He is likely to travel into the race, but he may have to pass several horses in a contest where the bias favours those already near the front.

The main negatives are the deeper closers. Beauty Generation, Pay Attention and Crimson Road all have repeated rear-running or slow-start traits. In a race where prominent racers are favoured, they may need the pace to collapse to become serious winning threats.

Best Bet: Wadacre Geisha

Wadacre Geisha is the best bet from a pace perspective. She has the strongest early-speed profile, arrives in good form, stays the trip, and matches the strongest historical pace angle at Nottingham over 1m2f. The lead may be contested, but she is the one most likely to control the race or at least secure first run.

Main Danger

Rugby Union is the danger. He could get the perfect trip just behind the leaders and may improve from his stable/handicap debut.

Verdict

This race should be run at an honest tempo, with Wadacre Geisha likely to lead or sit very close to the lead. If she avoids an early duel with Phantom Shadow, she has the tactical setup to take plenty of catching. Wadacre Geisha is the best bet.
