The 17:25 at Yarmouth looks a race where pace could be the decisive factor, and that points strongly towards Dion Baker.
Michael Wigham’s gelding is a confirmed front-runner who has been thriving recently, winning three of his last four starts before another solid third at Brighton earlier this week. His run comments are very clear: “led”, “soon led”, “made all”, “raced alone far side and led”, and “prominent” appear repeatedly. This is not a horse who occasionally finds himself in front; he is habitually ridden to use his early speed.
That matters at Yarmouth over 7f. The supplied track data shows front-runners have a 17.41% strike-rate, ahead of prominent racers at 14.57%, while held-up horses are only 9.04%. In a Class 6 handicap, being able to control position early is a major tactical edge.
The main possible pace rival is Federal Envoy, who has led in the past and was close up when second at Ripon last time. However, his comments also contain repeated fading and weakening after racing handy, so he may struggle if taking Dion Baker on too aggressively. Jungle Knight is another interesting pace-positive runner after travelling strongly and winning over course and distance, but he looks more likely to stalk than lead.
The closers have more to prove tactically. Adelaide Bay has been finishing well, including “stayed on strongly” and “nearest finish” recently, but his overall profile is that of a hold-up horse. Wilde And Dandy and Mayflower Rock also risk being too far back if the race does not collapse.
Giant is respected after finishing well over 6f at Windsor and stepping back up to 7f, but his pace profile is mixed and he may need the leaders to come back. From a tactical standpoint, Dion Baker looks more straightforward.
Verdict
This looks set up for Dion Baker to attack early, either lead outright or sit very handy, and make full use of Yarmouth’s pace bias. He is not bombproof, especially after a busy spell, but he has the clearest tactical advantage in the race.
Best bet: Dion Baker
Main danger: Jungle Knight
