The 20:53 at Kempton is a competitive 6f Class 5 handicap, but the shape of the race looks especially important. Kempton’s 6f races have historically favoured horses racing prominently, with front-runners enjoying a strong record. However, this particular contest may not be as simple as siding with the fastest early horse.
Initial Blue looks the most likely leader. He has made all, led after a furlong, contested the lead and led on his latest start. From stall 5, he is well drawn to attack the race early and could get first run on many of these.
The problem is that he may not get peace. Giorgio M has made all before and regularly races forward, while Express Train and Balon Dor also have enough early speed to get involved. With several pace angles, the early fractions could be strong rather than steady.
That makes Brazen Idol the most interesting runner. He is not a one-dimensional front-runner, but he has enough tactical speed to sit close to the pace. His recent Ffos Las second showed he remains in good heart, staying on strongly and only just missing out over 5f. The return to 6f at Kempton, where he is already a dual course-and-distance winner, looks ideal.
The key is race position. Brazen Idol should be able to sit just behind the pace battle rather than get dragged into it. If Initial Blue, Giorgio M and Balon Dor go hard early, Brazen Idol could be the one travelling best into the straight.
Serenity Dream is respected dropping in grade and has solid course form, but his run style is more midfield-based and he may need gaps at the right time. Travel Agent and Invincible Speed are capable closers, but Kempton’s 6f setup is not always kind to hold-up horses unless the pace completely collapses.
The biggest tactical concern is for Massimo Blue, who often races from the rear and has a history of slow starts. From stall 11, he may need plenty to fall right.
Best Bet
Brazen Idol is the selection. He has course-and-distance form, arrives after a strong recent effort, returns to his optimum trip and should get the ideal stalking setup behind a contested pace.
Main Danger
Initial Blue is the danger if he clears the field early and controls the race from the front.
Verdict
A strongly run 6f looks likely. Initial Blue may lead, but Brazen Idol can sit behind the speed and pounce late.
Best bet: Brazen Idol.
