4.40 Thirsk Preview – Pace Could Make The Race

·

The 4.40 at Thirsk looks a fascinating 7f handicap because the race is loaded with early speed. On the raw racecard alone, several horses arrive in form, but the run-comment evidence suggests this may not be a simple case of backing the most obvious front-runner.

The key pace players are King Of War, In A Hurry and Avatar Jet. All three have repeated evidence of leading or making the running. King Of War has recently made all, In A Hurry has led in six of her last ten, and Avatar Jet has also been ridden aggressively in recent starts.

That creates the central tactical problem: none of them looks guaranteed an easy lead.

Thirsk over 7f has historically favoured front-runners, but this setup looks different. When three or more horses want the same early position, the edge can shift away from the leaders and towards those able to sit just behind them.

That brings Tattie Bogle strongly into the picture.

He has the ideal run style for this race. Earlier comments show he can lead or race prominently, but his recent win came from being held up towards the rear before finishing strongly. That versatility is a major asset here. He does not need to fight for the lead, but he should have enough tactical speed to sit close enough if the race develops quickly.

Farandaway is another who should get a suitable setup. His recent comments repeatedly show him chasing leaders, travelling in midfield, then making progress. He looks more of a stalker than a leader, and a strong pace should help him settle and finish.

Al Muqdad is interesting at a bigger price. He is usually held up, and his last two runs show late strength rather than early speed. From a high draw, which looks a positive on the stalls data, he could be finishing better than most if the leaders go too hard.

The pace negatives are easier to identify. In A Hurry has plenty of early speed, but the run comments regularly include “weakened”, “headed” and “no extra”. She may again travel well early before becoming vulnerable late. Avatar Jet, drawn low in stall 1, could be forced into committing early. King Of War is a dangerous front-runner, but this does not look an easy race to dominate.

Best Bet: Tattie Bogle

Tattie Bogle is the best bet.

He has the strongest combination of current form, tactical flexibility and likely race position. He can race handy, but he does not need the lead. In a race full of pace, that is a major advantage. The expected strong gallop should allow him to sit behind the speed and attack late.

The danger is that Thirsk’s 7f bias can favour those on the front end, but with King Of War, In A Hurry and Avatar Jet all likely to press forward, this may be a race where the best-positioned stalker gets the run of things.

Selection: Tattie Bogle
Main danger: Farandaway
Each-way/outsider angle: Al MuqdadI’d have Tattie Bogle as the win bet, with Al Muqdad the one most interesting at a bigger price.
