Six runners go to post for Thursday evening’s 5f handicap at Bellewstown, and despite the small field, the race looks tactically fascinating.
The market is headed by Namiid and Treasured Royal, while Billie Be Quick has attracted support from those expecting a strong pace. However, the shape of the race may prove more important than the raw ratings.
Pace Battle on the Cards
The key to the contest is likely to be the early speed.
Rosie Frith has one of the most aggressive pace profiles in the field. Her recent comments include “led”, “made all”, “broke very quickly to lead” and “disputed lead”, suggesting connections are unlikely to change tactics.
She won’t have things her own way though.
Namiid made all to win a Navan maiden and has repeatedly raced prominently throughout his career. His latest handicap run saw him lead before being headed late, confirming that forcing tactics remain his preferred approach.
Adding further pressure is Smoke Them Out, another habitual front-runner whose recent form figures have come after racing prominently or disputing the lead.
With three natural pace horses drawn together in stalls 4, 5 and 6, a contested lead appears highly likely.
The Track Bias Factor
Bellewstown’s 5f statistics are striking.
Over the last 400 comparable races:
Front-runners have won nearly 30%
Prominent racers have won almost 12%
Held-up horses have won only 2.4%
Ordinarily, this would point strongly towards backing the horse most likely to secure the lead.
The complication here is that there may not be a single horse allowed an uncontested advantage.
Instead, the front-runners could end up compromising each other.
Who Benefits?
The runner with the most attractive tactical setup is Treasured Royal.
Unlike the three pace angles, she is usually ridden just behind the leaders. Her recent comments regularly show her tracking the pace before making a move in the closing stages.
That profile looks ideal here.
She should get a perfect tow into the race without expending energy in the early battle.
If Rosie Frith, Namiid and Smoke Them Out force each other along through the first two furlongs, Treasured Royal is likely to be the first horse stalking them when the race begins in earnest.
What About Billie Be Quick?
The Racing Post verdict sided with Billie Be Quick, and there is certainly logic behind that view.
She is a genuine closer and the expected strong pace should suit.
However, there are two concerns.
Firstly, Bellewstown’s 5f configuration has historically been brutal for hold-up horses.
Secondly, in a six-runner field there is less chance of traffic and less likelihood of a complete pace collapse than in a large-field sprint.
She should be finishing strongly, but she may simply run out of track.
Verdict
The market leader Namiid is respected and may prove the best horse in the race, but tactically he faces pressure throughout.
Rosie Frith and Smoke Them Out also look vulnerable to an early battle.
That leaves Treasured Royal, who appears to have the most favourable race setup of all.
She can sit just behind the pace, conserve energy and attack at the right moment, while still racing close enough to benefit from Bellewstown’s strong bias towards horses near the front.
Best Bet
🥇 Treasured Royal
She combines the strongest tactical position with a likely race shape that should play directly to her strengths. In a race where the principals on paper are expected to attack each other early, Treasured Royal looks the runner most likely to get the perfect trip and could be the value play against the favourite.
