Newbury 21:00 – Pace Map Preview & Best Bet

·

The concluding 5f apprentice handicap at Newbury looks a fascinating tactical race, with several habitual pace horses drawn across the track and a race shape that could prove more important than the handicap marks.

On paper, Faustus, Merrimack, Over Spiced and Havana Jag all possess enough early speed to ensure the leaders do not get an easy time of things. The HRB run comments reveal a race packed with forward-going types rather than one dominated by a lone front-runner.

How the Race Could Unfold

The most likely early leader is Faustus. His recent comments repeatedly contain phrases such as “led”, “disputed lead” and “led overall”, and he has broken quickly often enough to suggest connections will again try to make all.

However, Faustus has shown a recurring tendency to weaken in the closing stages once pressure is applied. His last ten comments include numerous examples of being headed inside the final furlong after forcing the pace.

Merrimack looks the principal danger from a tactical perspective. He has repeatedly raced prominently, made all on occasions, and has regularly travelled strongly near the pace. Importantly, he does not appear quite as dependent on securing the lead as Faustus, which could allow him to enjoy the perfect stalking position.

Over Spiced is another who should get a favourable trip. Her profile is that of a prominent racer rather than an all-out trailblazer, and she could find herself sitting just behind the speed battle waiting to strike.

The horse most likely to be inconvenienced by the race shape is Just Jump. There is little doubt he possesses the raw ability to win off his current mark, but his comments are littered with:

Slowly away

Dwelt

Awkward start

Towards rear

Refused to leave stalls

In a strongly-run 5f handicap, giving away ground at the gates can be terminal. He overcame adversity at Windsor last time, but asking him to do it again is a risky proposition.

The Track Bias Angle

The Newbury 5f data strengthens the case for those racing close to the pace.

From the last 400 comparable races:

Run Style Strike Rate

Front Runner 16.1%
Tracked/Chased 10.3%
Held Up 10.6%
Mid Division 2.2%

Front runners have comfortably outperformed every other group.

That doesn’t automatically mean the horse who leads wins. Instead, it highlights the advantage enjoyed by runners who secure a prominent position before the race begins in earnest.

Runner-by-Runner Tactical View

Merrimack

Expected position: Prominent/Leader

Consistent pace profile, arrives in form, and should secure a prime position from stall 8. Looks likely to get first run on many rivals.

Faustus

Expected position: Leader

Could lead outright but may face pressure throughout. Has often been vulnerable late.

Over Spiced

Expected position: Prominent

Likely to get a smooth trip and should be finishing strongly if the leaders overdo things.

Truly Glamorous

Expected position: Just behind pace

Improving profile and still learning. Should get a good tow into the race.

Just Jump

Expected position: Rear

Possibly the most talented horse in the field but highly dependent on breaking cleanly.

Best Bet

Merrimack

If I were having one bet in the race, it would be Merrimack.

The reason is almost entirely tactical.

He combines:

Proven early speed.

Ability to lead or track.

Recent strong form.

A draw that should allow him to sit close to the pace.

A race shape likely to suit better than the pure front-runners.

Faustus may have to work too hard to hold the lead. Just Jump may once again leave himself with too much to do. Over Spiced is respected, but Merrimack appears the runner most likely to enjoy the ideal trip.

Predicted Finish

1. Merrimack

2. Over Spiced

3. Truly Glamorous

4. Faustus

5. Just Jump

Verdict

Expect Faustus to force the issue early, with Merrimack and Over Spiced keeping him company. The pace should be honest to strong throughout, creating an ideal setup for a horse sitting just off the lead. From a pure pace-and-positioning perspective, Merrimack looks the runner with the strongest tactical advantage and is the one I would want on my side.
