13:50 Sandown Preview: Words Of Truth Has the Profile to Strike in the Coral Charge

·

The 13:50 at Sandown, the Coral Charge Group 3 over 5f, brings together a fascinating mix of proven older sprinters, progressive younger horses and a few lively outsiders with stronger claims than their odds suggest.

At the head of the market, Asfoora, Rumstar and Words Of Truth dominate the discussion. Asfoora brings the strongest peak form into the race, with Group 1-winning ability and the highest historical ratings in the field. However, at seven, she is not quite the bombproof proposition she once was, and her recent profile has become more inconsistent.

Rumstar is rock-solid. He won this race last year and returns without the penalty he carried 12 months ago. His Palace House second earlier in the season also reads well, and he should be highly competitive if bouncing back from a poor Royal Ascot effort, where he had excuses.

However, the most appealing profile belongs to Words Of Truth. Charlie Appleby’s three-year-old is already a course-and-distance winner, having landed the Scurry Stakes over this same 5f trip. He receives weight from the older sprinters, has tactical speed, finishes his races strongly and remains open to further improvement. In a race where the established horses are largely exposed, that progressive edge could prove decisive.

The likely pace shape also suits him. Luna A Inbhir Nis looks the probable front-runner, with Shagraan and Partisan Hero likely to race prominently. That should give Words Of Truth the ideal tow into the race from just behind the speed. If the leaders go hard, his strong finishing style becomes even more valuable.

For value seekers, Getreadytorumble is interesting. He has been highly tried in Group company recently but now drops back into a more suitable level. His strong place record over the trip and surface, combined with a hold-up style that could suit a well-run 5f, makes him a legitimate each-way player.

At a much bigger price, Partisan Hero is not without appeal. He needs to improve on ratings, but his recent form is solid, and the HRB statistical profile is eye-catching, particularly his strong place record under today’s conditions. He is unlikely to be the most talented horse in the race, but he may be overpriced.

The one to be careful with is Asfoora. She is clearly good enough to win, but at short odds she makes limited appeal given her age and recent inconsistency. Her best form would win this, but the market is already fully aware of that.

Verdict

Words Of Truth looks the right favourite on profile. He combines course-and-distance form, weight-for-age advantage, tactical versatility and the most obvious scope for improvement. Rumstar is the solid danger, while Getreadytorumble and Partisan Hero appeal most from a value perspective.

Selection: Words Of Truth
Main danger: Rumstar
Best value: Getreadytorumble
Big-price outsider: Partisan Hero
Overbet risk: Asfoora
