18:45 Chepstow Preview: Darkened Edge Sets The Standard, But Rogue Rebellion Appeals At The Prices

·

The 18:45 at Chepstow is a low-grade but interesting 5f classified stakes on good-to-firm ground, where proven speed and track suitability look vital. With eight runners declared, the race revolves around whether short-priced favourite Darkened Edge can confirm her recent handicap form now dropping into classified company.

On the ratings, Darkened Edge is clearly the one to beat. She has posted two solid efforts at Bath since returning from a break and already has winning form over this course and distance on fast ground. Her profile is not especially progressive, but she brings the strongest recent form, ideal conditions and a notably positive trainer form angle. In a race lacking depth, that makes her the most likely winner.

However, at short odds she is not necessarily the best bet. The more interesting betting angle may be Rogue Rebellion, the sole three-year-old in the field. He receives weight from the older horses and showed a return to form when third at Bath earlier this week. His best form leaves him close enough to Darkened Edge to be dangerous, and he has more scope to improve than most of these exposed older sprinters.

Banana is another with claims if ready after a long absence. She won twice last year, including over this course and distance, and her front-running style could be effective around Chepstow’s sharp 5f. The concern is fitness, as she has not been seen since October.

Daley T comes here after a good third in classified company at Brighton, but he remains a 24-race maiden, which makes him hard to trust for win purposes. He has place claims, especially if the cheekpieces continue to help.

Of the outsiders, Bama Lama has a strong place-stat profile at Chepstow and on turf, but recent form is a concern. She looks more of a place player than a win candidate. Titus Thor showed a bit more at Bath last time and could outrun big odds, while Snow Boots and River Edge need major improvement.

Verdict

Darkened Edge is the most likely winner and deserves favouritism, but the value may lie with Rogue Rebellion, who has age, weight and improvement potential on his side. In a weak sprint, he looks overpriced if available at double-figure odds.

Selection: Rogue Rebellion each-way
Main danger: Darkened Edge
Place outsider: Bama Lama
Best forecast angle: Darkened Edge and Rogue Rebellion
