19:53 Chepstow Preview: Maid In Devon Sets the Standard, but Grey Horizon Adds Value

·

The 19:53 at Chepstow is a competitive 6f Class 4 handicap for three-year-olds, run on good-to-firm ground. With eight runners declared, the race has a useful mix of progressive types, exposed sprinters and a short-priced favourite with questions to answer.

Moscow Power is likely to be popular in the market and has the strongest raw Racing Post Rating in the field. His maiden win at Chelmsford was impressive and his third in a big-field Ascot handicap reads well. However, his latest effort at York over 7f was disappointing, so he now has to prove he can bounce back returned to 6f. He is respected, but at a short price there is not much room for error.

Maid In Devon makes plenty of appeal from a progression angle. She arrives chasing a hat-trick after two 6f wins at Salisbury and looks the type still improving. The rise in class is a concern, and she is 8lb higher than for her latest success, but her profile is the most upwardly mobile in the race. Receiving weight from several rivals, she looks a major player.

Evie Ross is another to consider. She won over 5f at Chepstow on good-to-firm ground last season and now returns to a track that clearly suits. Her two Chester runs this year were not outstanding on paper, but she was not ideally positioned last time and has slipped slightly in the handicap. She remains a live value contender if the market overlooks her.

Blue Orbit has solid place claims. Oisin Murphy is a positive booking and the return to turf should suit, but his recent form suggests he may be more reliable than progressive. He can run well without necessarily being the best betting proposition.

The interesting outsider is Grey Horizon. His latest run at Ffos Las was poor, but his wider statistical profile is strong, especially at 6f. He has a high place strike-rate at the distance and good records with today’s jockey. He is exposed, so he may lack the upside of Maid In Devon, but at double-figure odds he looks a fair each-way or place option.

Sanaam has ability but has shown his best recent form on the all-weather, while Star Material needs to revive after two quiet runs this season. Double Naughty is better than her latest soft-ground effort and could outrun big odds if returning to her Bath form, but she needs improvement.

The most likely winner is Maid In Devon, whose current momentum and 6f profile make her the one to beat. Moscow Power is dangerous on his best form, but he looks short enough after a poor latest run. For betting purposes, Grey Horizon makes most appeal as the value play, especially in the place market.

Verdict: Maid In Devon is the win selection, with Grey Horizon the best value each-way angle.
