The 20:40 at Beverley, the Churchill Tyres Handicap, brings together 11 runners over the extended 7f on good-to-firm ground, and it looks a typically competitive Class 6 handicap where course form, race position and value may prove just as important as raw ratings.
The market is headed by The Sweet Escape, who brings the strongest recent Racing Post Rating into the race and has been largely consistent since winning at Nottingham in April. He has solid form claims, but there is a slight concern that this sharp 7½f may be on the short side, with his profile suggesting he may ideally want a little further. At a short price, he makes more appeal as a contender than a standout betting proposition.
Jesmond Dawn has a very solid chance. His latest Redcar third can be marked up, as he was reportedly disadvantaged by the track bias, and his overall statistical profile is strong. He handles the ground, stays the trip and has enough recent form to suggest he should be involved. He looks one of the safer options in the race.
Reginald Charles is another with strong place credentials, especially with P J McDonald booked, but the major drawback is his turf record. He has yet to win in 18 attempts on grass, so while he can easily run well, he may again find one or two too strong.
The value angle is King Sharja. He has won three times at Beverley, is back on a workable mark, and his record under today’s conditions reads well. His recent efforts have been solid rather than spectacular, but this race setup looks suitable and he appears overpriced compared with several shorter rivals. At double-figure odds, he makes the most appeal each-way.
Sunny Orange is another course specialist worth respecting. He won this race last year and four of his five career wins have come at Beverley. Recent form has been mixed, but returning to this class and track gives him claims of outrunning his odds.
At bigger prices, Dr Rio is interesting for place purposes. He has an excellent Beverley and going profile, including strong place statistics at the track and trip. The concern is stall 11, which may make life difficult, but he is not without each-way appeal if getting across into a rhythm.
Travis arrives after a Redcar win, but that performance came with a possible track-bias advantage. He could confirm his revival, but he now has more to prove off a higher mark. Qazaq is capable but remains hard to trust, while Sir David, Tropez Power and Electric Lightning need to take a step forward on recent evidence.
Overall, this is not a race to take a short price in. The Sweet Escape and Jesmond Dawn are obvious players, but the strongest betting angle lies with the Beverley specialists.
