The 16:55 at Doncaster is a competitive Class 4 fillies’ handicap over 5f, run on good-to-firm ground, and it has the look of a race where value may sit away from the obvious market leaders.
Eternal Sunshine heads plenty of lists after showing more encouragement at Ayr last time, and her historical profile gives her a solid chance. She has good place statistics under these conditions and this is traditionally her time of year. However, she is exposed and short enough in the market, so she may be more solid than spectacular.
Chicory is arguably the most interesting improver. Ed Walker’s filly shaped well when second at Nottingham on her first serious try over 5f, and this more demanding straight sprint could suit her ideally. She remains lightly raced and has the profile of one who could still be ahead of her mark.
The strongest value case, though, is Dragon Spin. She arrives after a career-best win at Thirsk and her Stat Attack profile is excellent, showing strong place records by direction, handicap setup, race code, distance and trainer. As a progressive three-year-old, she still has scope to improve, and odds around 5/1 look fair in an open race.
Alpine Girl is another worth noting at bigger odds. She won this race last year and has strong summer, going and distance stats. She does need things to fall right over 5f, but at double-figure odds she is not easily dismissed.
Space Bear and Saffron Dandy both hold claims, but neither looks especially generous in the market. Alondra is consistent but remains vulnerable for win purposes, while Cressida Wildes needs a major revival.
The verdict is that Chicory may be the most likely winner on upside, but Dragon Spin makes most appeal as the value bet. Alpine Girl is a lively each-way alternative for those looking at a bigger price.
