I’m Next Sets the Standard in Competitive Beverley Sprint 19.02

·

The 19:02 Beverley, a Class 4 five-furlong handicap on good-to-firm ground, brings together a sharp field of sprint handicappers, but the progressive I’m Next looks the runner they all have to beat.

Tim Easterby’s four-year-old has been in excellent form this season, beginning his campaign with a second and a win over course and distance before adding another victory at Redcar last month. That latest success produced a career-best effort and, although he now races from a career-high mark, his profile still suggests there could be more to come. From stall two, he is well positioned to attack this sharp Beverley five furlongs and should get every chance under David Allan.

The chief danger may be Elegant Erin, a nine-year-old mare with a superb Beverley record. She has won five times over course and distance and returned to better form when third at Nottingham last time. Her handicap mark has eased after a tough start to the season, and if the race is run strongly, she is capable of finishing powerfully.

Emperor Spirit also enters calculations at a fair price. His recent Epsom run is easy to forgive, and his earlier Ascot second on good-to-firm ground reads well in this context. He is not the most reliable, but his class and going statistics make him a serious each-way player.

Of the others, Mon Na Slieve has place claims after a better run at Hamilton, while Tiva is consistent but may again prove vulnerable to better-treated rivals. Hundred Caps and Master Of My Fate need to bounce back on turf, while Managing Director is interesting but risky after a 630-day absence.

Overall, I’m Next has the strongest combination of current form, draw, pace position and course suitability. Elegant Erin is the obvious course-specialist danger, while Emperor Spirit appeals as the value alternative for each-way players.

Selection: I’m Next
Main danger: Elegant Erin
Best value: Emperor Spirit each-way
