The 16:10 at Sandown, the Join Coral Bet £5 Get £30 Handicap, is a small but intriguing six-runner Class 3 contest over 7f on good-to-firm ground. With only three-year-olds involved and several lightly raced profiles in the field, this is a race where improvement potential matters just as much as proven form.
At the head of the market, King’s Cavalry has obvious claims. James Tate’s colt arrives in winning form after landing a Doncaster handicap over this trip, and he remains open to further progress after just four career starts. He travels strongly, handles fast ground and has already shown he can win from a prominent position. On raw ratings, he sets a very solid standard.
However, the race shape may just tilt the balance towards Spirit Of Saxony. Eve Johnson Houghton’s runner caught the eye over this course and distance last time, finishing strongly after being denied a clear run. That effort suggested he may still be ahead of his mark, and the form has since received a boost. With HorseRaceBase identifying him as likely to track the pace in a race lacking obvious front-runners, he could get the ideal tactical setup.
The projected pace is weak, with no confirmed front-runner. He’s Waliim may be the one to go forward, but his profile includes a tendency to weaken late, and he returns from a break. That makes Spirit Of Saxony’s stalking style especially attractive. He has the strongest late-finishing signal in the field and should be close enough to strike before the closers are asked to make up ground.
King’s Cavalry remains the major danger, but there is a slight concern that he may not be perfectly positioned if he is awkward early. In a steadily run small-field race, giving away early ground can be costly. He still has the class and potential to win, but at the prices he looks more fairly valued than underestimated.
Jungle Ruler is the interesting outsider. His recent form has levelled off, but the HRB stats are kinder to him than the bare form book, particularly regarding trainer track performance and recent jockey form. The issue is tactical: as a likely held-up runner, he may need a stronger gallop than this race appears likely to provide.
Richie’s Rocket has the back-class to be dangerous, especially back at 7f after failing to shine over 1m in the Britannia. However, he needs to revive after a few underwhelming turf efforts. Sunny Smile has a top jockey back on board in Oisin Murphy, but his recent form leaves him with something to prove.
Overall, this looks a tactical race rather than a searching test. King’s Cavalry is the obvious form horse, but Spirit Of Saxony brings the right combination of course form, finishing strength, pace position and value.
The verdict is Spirit Of Saxony to get the better of King’s Cavalry, with Jungle Ruler capable of outrunning his odds if the principals underperform.
